I'll admit, I've probably been on Facebook longer than I care to remember (I was a member back shortly after it was launched to nationally), so I've seen it evolve (if you want to call it that) quite a bit since then. I have found myself on it much less than usual especially in the last few months.

I've found that it's becoming a tool or avenue for product/event pushing, not to mention a breeding ground for political nonsense posters making absurd claims that a simple fact check proves completely false. Pictures of people holding signs urging them to get 1 million likes to get a puppy. Stories about professors challenging faith of students. Essentially, these are taking place of the now infamous email forwards that are all be relegated to the past.

Now, before I let this post become too much of a cynical rant, I will definitely continue to use Facebook, as I still think it has value for what its intended purpose was - connect with those you know in your "network." There's a lot of good aspects of Facebook, but I suppose it's like everything in this world that changes.

Just curious as I know a few of you (most likely more than a few) are on Facebook. How long have you been a member? Do you find yourself using it more or less? Perhaps I'm just in the minority. Who knows.

Also, in case you're wondering what spawned this random, nonsensical thread, I teach an Interactive Media course here at our school, and social media is a big component of that course. We were discussing trends and social media platform lifespans today...hence the post:D

I don't use it for anything other than its intended purpose as you said, to stay in touch. I really only check it a couple times a day via my phone, probably 3-5min altogether to see whats going on.

I post hunting and fishing pics on there. I do use it to keep in touch with some old friends that I don't see often. But I don't use it as much as I did in the past. Mostly due to people using it to post trivial crap like they are doing laundry, or people venting about HS type drama.

I agree about all the garbage on it. Some is entertaining, but after seeing so much fighting about everything political, racial, religious, ethical, and all the other stuff it's pretty much turned me away. I've used for like 7 years and only scan the news feed to stay in touch a little but get too sick from the other stuff. Some jokes are great, certain stories ok, some slogans decent, and tough to complain about smutty pictures, but after all that has made me sick of a lot of society and how it's headed and I usually regret looking at it. Most of it all gets way overbroad because it cannot be proven and people seem to be more intense and heated when it's typing. I like seeing some products and stuff, but that's it, some. I think it'll keep getting worse too. I've quit a lot of forums and stuff for a lot of same reasons and hope this one is here for good.

Well, my damn Mom got on FB last night, so I had to go through and delete half my college pics this morning

And I've seen FB evolve from the beginning. I've been on FB since 2004. Back when you had to have a .edu e-mail address from only a few colleges around the country. Mark had his picture at the bottom of the page. There was some quote about woodcocks or something. No newsfeed. None of the stuff today. It was great for college kids to share stuff.

Of course, we had not idea that 10 years later it would be the biggest thing on the internet, and all the crap we shared would be now available to be viewed by our mom.

I use FB to keep track with my friends. We are spread all over the world. It makes it quite easy to keep in touch. That's about it. FB is quite easily customizable. People that complain about FB all the time, are just as annoying as the people that post status updates every 30 seconds.

And the worst people of all? The people that take every chance they can get to tell you that they don't have FB.

Yep, I joined in 2005. Remember, "too close for missiles, switching to guns?"

I don't usually complain about Facebook, but I was more or less curious as to what everyone thinks about how it has evolved.

Oh, and your mom, if she's like most of middle aged America on Facebook, is about to inundate your news feed with pictures of babies, puppies, veteran's, and political news :D

    Just kidding...but seriously.

I have not been on as long as you two. I joined when it was first opened to the public and it has changed so much since then. I have noticed a lot more of the above lately. I just recently started updating what I receive from certain people to rid my newsfeed of it. I get aggravated when I log on and have to wade through 25,000 posts of shared pictures pictures from some goofy page just to see the posts I am actually interested in.

I think when Iran or China attack us through the Internet and shut us down it will be through Facebook.
    But that me.
If its important enough my friends call or email me personally.

Did you know facebook monitors your browsing while your logged in, and places its ads accordingly?

I use it to look up old girlfriends to see what they look like today...:). Actually it's getting pretty annoying lately, it seems like everyone needs to share those little pictures that are supposed to be funny, clogs my newsfeed.

Where its headed...its going to become a marketplace. As a public company, it, like Google have to generate revenue for shareholders.

Also, you really don't have privacy on internet, nor much of anywhere in the electronic world...

I got facebook my freshman year of college (2005). I used it all the time then. Now I log on maybe once a month. I guess I finally realized that picking up the phone and calling a friend means a lot more than sending a message or liking a pic. I also lost interest when it started turning into myspace.
