I didn't pay too close of attention to the wheels, but I could have SWORN they were factory. They weren't aftermarket.
Oops, I stand corrected (sorry, bud). I did a quick search, and I guess you could get them as an option on the FX4. What size tires were they? A quick search shows that I THINK the size on those rims stock were 275/55/20, which works out to be close to a 32x10.50. You could go with a 325/60R20 which is a tall 35" tire and ~ 12.5" wide. The problem is the width. The height may even be a problem (leveling kit would be necessary), but that tire is most likely going to rub at least at full lock. If you got aftermarket wheels with backspacing that put the wheel a little out in the fender, you might alleviate it some, but not worth it. Short answer? Stay with 33s, or go to 18s at least.:D
Spark plug problems on the 5.4's were pre-2004. When they released the 3 valve 5.4 that problem was resolved. In older models the threads would strip out of the head and shoot the plug out. Even if that happened, it can be fairly easily remedied with a helicoil kit at your local dealer for around $300. The 4.6 is definitely underpowered for the newer model trucks. When the 04 were released they really increased the weight b/c of the new frame design, which helps the ride and to keep cab noise down. 5.4 is the only way to go, and considering they get virtually the same mileage there's no reason to get the smaller motor if you have the choice. In 06 the FX4 came standard with 17's, with an option for 20" rims if it's a Crew Cab. If you're concerned about fitting a set of 35's under it, get a leveling kit for the front. It will raise your front end up about 1.5" and you'll be able to clear them no problem on those rims.
Ok Matt, you have my attention, you know what you're talking about! lol I'm not going to lie, I liked the looks of those stock rims. They looked good. I want 35's on there, and I was already planning on a leveling kit. What size could work on those stock rims (35" tire) and I'm figuring a 2.5" level like Trevors would probably be good for clearance purposes. I'd say an 1" in the back wouldn't hurt too. Getting into more money there. What do you think? I didn't look at the tire size, but they were actually pretty good size. They did look like 31's or 32's.
It's a Crew cab, JUST like the blue one in the picture. The one in the picture is an 05' and this one is an 06', same color. It has the black leather interior with the "captain seats". It's a really sharp truck. I used to not be a fan of the F-150's but they have grown on me. Nice interiors, and I love the Crew Cabs.
It's not the height of the wheel as Matt is saying, its how its spaced out from the truck when it comes to whether or not it will rub. Aftermarket wheels tend to stick the tires out farther from the truck, which actually will make the 35s rub. The only way I know to squeeze 35" tires onto a Ford with only a leveling kit, is to stay with the factory wheels....aftermarket wheels will space the tires out farther, and you would need to get 33 inch tires. Like Matt has said, IF you have money for new tires and wheels, I'd run a 17 or 18" wheel with 33" tires. In the end it will look better AND probably perform better. I liked the look of the OEM chrome wheels enough to stick with them, so I went with (I THINK) a 305/70R18, which is a pretty unique tire size. I have ZERO rubbing even at full lock.
Ok, well I found the exact picture of the truck. Went to the dealership's website, they've updated it. Here ya go. Like I said, almost identical except the wheels, and the leather interior. I also believe this one has the sliding rear glass.
Trevor, I'm in the same boat. The factory wheels on this truck look good, I like them. I'd like to stay with them, I believe. A leveling kit is definately in store, and then I guess I'll have to see where I stand.
Stock timing belt/water pump/idler tensioners/etc...? I just paid $700 for a set of BFG 265/75/16's......and even thinking of going to 285's (which would have required spacers at the tune of $100/ea) made my check book wince. I can't imagine buying a set of NICE 35's or a set of NICE tires to fit 20" rims. Kind of a cottage industry. They have you over the proverbial barrel with those.
That all depends on the wheel. Most can be ordered with different offsets to match your truck. Matt, did you say this one has the center console and shifter? The ones I looked at I liked the column shfter much better. The console shifter looked a little... well... phallic. LOL And who the heck wants a dildo shift knob???
I'm the opposite. I like having the center console and shift. I'm just not a huge fan of bench seats up front, which is what the column shifter is. The center console and shifter just "looks" nicer. I guess I just like the layout. As far as tires go Jeff, they are VERY high. I do, however, have a little bit of a "hook-up" in that department. A couple good archery buddies of mine work for a HUGE tire company here. They can usually get blem's or something for a heavily discounted price. I've never had to go through them, because I've never put tires on any vehicle I've had except the Honda. They got a set of Super Swamper 35x10x50's for my buddies Jeep though. I forget the price. The tire market can DEFINATELY make your head hurt when looking at prices.
The spark plug problem isnt completely resolved BTW. The plugs are set down in the head so far it is hard to know what you are doing. It is very comon to break the porcalin (sp) and have to pull the head. It is also a comon problem to cross thread them when reinstalling the new ones. I do all my own maitenence on all my heavy equipment but I will never ever do spark plugs on a Ford again! That beeing said I have a 04 Super crew with 183K on it I just replaced the plugs and 2 coils. I have relaced the water pump, Alternator, 1 ball joint, and brakes a couple times. Very very happy with this vehicle. The milage does suck but then again it is a 4x4 they all suck. Suburban to Tracker they all get bad. I would recomend a F150 to any one.
I have the Black Leather in My FX4 and love the center console with captains chairs. Bench seats in pickups are for grandpa's and insecure guys that pull their ladies over Urban Cowboy style.
Also having major problems with the exhaust studs rusting and breaking off inside the heads. With no room to work the heads must be pulled, and it's a major hassle to get the broken studs out. For some reason Ford decided to put in cheap studs, instead of stainless.
X2, it's still a problem for the 04-08s. Not that EVERY truck is going to have the issue, but it seems to be really well documented. Here's a good 4+ page forum read concerning some of the issues (mostly the #8 cylinder I guess, but it appears it's usually during replacement of the stock plugs).
Nope. 95-08 4cylinder Tacoma's have a timing chain. Serpentine belt was good, idlers were good (I did fry my AC compressor blasting through a coal region mud hole that was the size of my truck...so I chalk that up to a self-inflicted replacement:D). Now, my 05 has had the serpentine belt already replaced at 80K Not liking that. Plus I THINK my tensioner pulley is going bad, and I don't even offroad in this truck as much.
Well, with a leveling kit, you should be could with the height, it's the width that's the issue. The problem is when you start to get into the higher tire sizes, they tend to widen as well (the sidewall height ratio). So, stock size on these trucks (with the 20" option) from what I can gather, are roughly a 10.5" wide tire. It's VERY difficult (if not impossible...I didn't search too much for 20" wheels, but I know Interco makes 35x10.50s in 15" wheel sizes). I did, however, find something that may work for you. A 285/65/20 works out to basically a 35x11.50. Slighlty wider than stock, but actually a little UNDER a 35" tire. BFG makes it in their AT and their new MT. $356 and $361/piece respectively. If you want to run 35s on a 20" wheel, this is what I would go with. I only checked tirerack real quickly, and of the brands they carry, BFG was the only one carrying that size.
Had a couple of 1977 F150, then went to the dark side. Old Tacoma, T100, 2 tundras... Then back to a 2005 150 Lariet, loved the ride, comfortable, think it is the best looking truck. However, for having 300 hp. it lacked the umphh I thought it should have had, granted it's a heavy truck and I did have 3.73 gears, which aren't too bad. The gas milage was pathetic @ 13mpg. In 2007 I couldn't take it anymore and went back to the new tundra. Oh my fast truck this thing has some sack! I'd buy another without blinking an eye. This thing is almost as fast as my 06 GT Mustang, no joke, well maybe not that fast...
No doubt, the Tundras are quick! My buddy ran a 13.9 with his at the track and it's a crew cab! I threw an Edge programmer in my F150 and picked up a little power, which was enough to satisfy my needs.
