Last November after I was already tagged out my 80 acre hunting lease was logged - they tore some areas up pretty good. I'm not really "worried" about about my hunting property - I think it's going to still hunt pretty darn good. I just think some things will change, but I'm not sure exactly what to expect. Any suggestions? Unanticipated changes in the way it hunts that I might see?
One of my properties that I hunt was logged for two straight seasons. In my experience, the activity increased. The deer fed on the fallen limbs and trees, and began using the areas that weren’t being logged more frequently, which meant that I knew where they’d be traveling and when. The areas that were logged are now growing new growth that the deer use as a food source. I feel like there are more deer on the property than I’ve ever seen before with good bucks continuously cycling on and off the property every season.
I grew up hunting timber company property so dealing with clear cuts was just the norm. Large scale (hundreds to thousands of acres at a time). The first couple years after they are cut the activity definitely increases as long as it isn't sprayed, Because of all the forb growth. It was very conducive to rifle hunters but harder to narrow down with a bow at times. Look for those edges, and they will typically travel along topo features as they would before. Here is kinda what Im talking about with a set I actually hung last night. Behind this stand you can see where the loggers have done some work. This particular stand on a point of an otherwise small chunk of timber - but I’ve got a lot of piles like this throughout the property.
Looks good! The property I got permission on was logged out I believe two years ago, I’ve only scouted once or twice but it doesn’t seem like the deer are using the logged areas yet, hoping that changes Adam Matthews Z7 Magnum 29/70 Gold Tip Hunter XT 100g Slick Trick Standard
