I will be new to bow hunting this year and I haven't picked out a set of broadheads yet. I have been looking around and have had mixed feelings based on reviews. Is there really a huge difference in arrow flight between the 2 kinds of broadheads? I have been looking at Grimreaper, Rocky Mtn, and Crimson Talon for the most part. Expandable and non for all brands. Does anyone have a type that you swear by?

For fixed blades many people swear by the slick tricks. I personally don't like the idea of something mechanical failing during my shot so I won't shoot a mechanical broadhead. Fixed blades can be a little tougher to tune so they fly the same as a field point, but you can make any fixed blade fly as good as a mechanical broadhead. Also if you are trying to shoot a big mechanical broadhead, I think the recommended KE is around 60-65lbs. So make sure that you are shooting a bow capable of that before choosing your broadhead.

The nice thing about the 2 blade Blood Runners is IF they fail to open you'll still get a 1.125 cutting diameter.

I use good old Muzzy 100gr three blade fixed heads for hunting out of the blind and Wasp Jackhammer SST's when hanging in the stand. I just don't feel right shooting a mechanical through a shoot through mesh screen. I keep thinking that the blades will deploy when going through the screen.

    Well said, LOL.

It's not really a traditional mechanical, as it still cuts in the closed position. Check these out: www.cutsnomatterwhat.com.

Here are some wounds put on a hog and gator last week with the 2-blade:

If you shoot thru mesh-don't use mechanicals. If you shoot low poundage bow-better off shooting fixed blades .
For shooting longer distance(western hunting-mulie, elk) I would stick with mechanicals-they tend to fly more true and don't plane/catch wind. Mech. always fly like a field point.

I shot good 'ol muzzies for many years-they never let me down. They were great for bone too! They are designed with a bonecrusher up front that does exceptionally well when you hit bone. These days I exclusively shoot mechanicals-they tend to blow bigger, bloodier holes for me. I also like to go west, therefore prefer mechanicals (that don't plane in wind on longer shots). Target shooting on a windy day, shooting 60-70 yrds, I can hold my own with mechanicals-couldn't do this with my old muzzies...
Have fun with your search-let us know what you decide on.

there is no better than rage in there cage. the arrow flight is exceptional. you can literally shoot a field tipped arrow and then split it with a rage tipped arrow all day its like practice shooting on the real thing. and holes you can fit ur fist in. i hit my buck last year a lil far back the blades are so long on the two blade rages that there was about a one inch gash through both of the lungs and the deers guts where fallin out the hole as he went down about thirty yards from where i shot him. there is no better broad head.
