Here's a good article for those that want to give Cross Fit a try. http://www.crossfit.com/journal/library/13_03_Benchmark_Workouts.pdf
I just found this thread. I don't think I posted on it in the past and forgot so I will try to stay with this one. I was in great shape for years but have gained alot of weight and need to get back into it. I am retired but I was a wildland firefighter for the USFS. Long hours, stress and frustration put on the pounds but now that I am reitred I am working and loosing the weight. I just completed my 20th Birkebeiner and attached the photo. My plan is daily skiing in the winter and biking in the summer along with good eating plan. For manageing this I use a program calle CROSSTRAINER. It tracks activity and diet really well. I had an online caoching program years ago that helped with biking, they do other sports too, but is too expensive for me now. Still, I know enough and keeeping learning so I am sure I can get back into it.
Welcome, I know a lot of people who do training programs of one sort or another. Bottom line is doing it and managing both the calorie intake and the calorie burn and balancing workouts and meals to get proper nutrition while losing weight. MichaelP said it well: My story is a bit different, I gained weight after learning I have a weird form of glaucoma and the docs didn't want me doing things that caused my eyes to be jarred. I gained 25-30 pounds. They finally let me go back to working out and swimming, triathlons, etc have been working well for me. The cross-country skiing looks like a blast but we don't get snow down in Alabama.
Still gearing up for my first brazilian jiu jitsu tourney in 9 years. Been training hard for three months, five days a week. Had to take a break from all lifting/running for 10 days because my body broke down. I still trained bjj through that time. Taking time off lifting and running let my 38 year old body heal up. Making the final 11 week push towards June. I will be in great shape for my age, ready to rumble.
Oh to be 38 again. LOL. (Turned 50 in January) I ran a half marathon Monday and I could barely walk yesterday. I strained, bruised, whatever my meniscus and man it hurts. I will stick to swimming again for a while I guess. Good luck with the healing and the rumbling in June.
I bet 50 hurts a lot worse than 38. Man I got in a little scrap at work the other day and bounced both my knees off the concrete and now both of my knees hurt. Below my right patella I have a 5 inch around bruise and it took a week to form. My bruises used to form in about a day or two. hahaha.
Started looking through this thread the other day. Tried doing some burpies after a hike with the backpack half loaded. Those are not easy to do a lot of. Going to keep doing them. Had never heard of them before.
7 mile trail run this morning, 27 days until the 50k. http://www.thenorthface.com/downloads/pdf/2012_NY_50K.pdf
I've been running pretty hard this winter, about an hour a day. A buddy and I are signed up to do a half marathon in a few weeks. As a result of all the running, I'm getting what appears to be shin splints. Sucks so bad too since I love to run so much, it's been my stress reliever. Time to take it easy for a while I guess.
Just ice and a break from running will help. Try running on softer surfaces like a track or grass if possible.
I took a week off and was icing daily but it came right back once I started running again, I'm going to look into some different insoles for my shoes and hopefully that helps
Tough Mudder done... Liked it so much I signed up for this one http://www.savagerace.com/maryland2013 Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk 2
Finally warmed up enough here to run outside, I did my first 10 mile of the year this past Saturday morning - it felt damn good to run outside again
When is your half, Jay? I'm almost exactly 1 month out from our Tough Mudder. Holding steady on the training. Doing 4-7 mile trail runs 3 times a week. One or two intervals every week, and lifting 3 days as well. One day of rest. Feeling good, but also still unsure of how ready I am.
Figured I would bump this thread since I'm three weeks out from Tough Mudder. Broke a big barrier for me today. Ran 9.09 miles (all trail) and averaged 7:57min/mile with ~951ft total climb. 4 of my miles were well under 8 mins including mile 8 which was 7:50. Pretty happy, and that will probably be my peak. I'll start tapering a little from here until the end.
Good work. Congrats on hitting goal. Just started getting serious this weekend about cutting weight and filled my place with a lot of healthy food. Nothing nad to eat. Now if I can control portions and keep working out. Good things should happen. Good luck with the tough mudder. Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk 2
