Starting to switch to trail/off pavement running now as I switch up training for my Tough Mudder, and I can see myself liking running somewhat again:D
I'm trying to totally stay off the road when I run. I have been going down to the soccer turf field and my knees have been thanking me.
Yeah Brett, I paid for it a little bit last weekend doing a 4.5 mile run on a local bike path. Hit decent time for me (7:28min/mile pace), but my right leg was a little sore the day after. Resting up this week (just on the bike for cardio) and then I'm easing back into next week all offroad this time.
Took advantage of the snow day today to try the tough mudder recommended circuit training. The easiest parts were the running intervals, haha. It definitely kicked my butt. Not sure what that means, but I have about 10 weeks to find out.
Alot of my buddies are doing interval training. Either sprinting then walking (repeated) or lifting then doing 3 minutes on the tread mill, then going back to lifting (repeated). For cutting fat and not bulking up, is this a good option?
I believe it is a much better option, although I can't scientifically explain why it is. I think part of it is linked to the rest (or lack of) your muscles have between sets. It is all about continually changing your workout and not letting your body get accustomed to any one thing.
If you want to cut and not bulk, a great workout is timed 100 burpees. I usually do this on Mondays. I try to beat my time every week. Usually takes about 8-10 minutes, and that is all you need. Great, great work out.
Probably the worse 20min of my life was spent doing 100 burpees with the max time allowed being 5 min. Each time we failed to do 100 in 5 min, the count and clock both started over. I'm cringing just typing this.
100 burpees in 5 minutes? Holy hell. At the moment, my record is a little over 8 minutes. I want to get it under 7.
I had to do burpees for 1 minute straight as one of the exercises during the circuit today. Let's just say that and the frog jumps destroyed me.
cut equals calorie deficit, bulk equals calorie surplus. How you workout will aid what gains/losses you see, but make no mistake, diet is key. You cannot out run a poor diet. Burpees Suck!!!! I had never done a burpee in my life, but the penalty for missing/failing an obstacle during the spartan race was 30 burpees. I failed 1, and that made me refuse to fail anymore because they tire you out.
I agree burpees suck. I have no desire to do 10 let alone 100. My current workout is a body weight circuit done 3x week. It's pretty tough. It's geared towards strength than conditioning. I still run, but with no marathon to train for and crappy weather, I have slacked a lot in that dept. As soon as the weather breaks I will be doing mroe running. I have put on about 10# since last May/June. It's all good weight too. I am still just as lean as I was back then.
Speaking of circuits, anyone have some ideas I can use to switch mine up? I'm focusing on cutting until about May/June and focusing on cardio during that time, but I don't want to lose too much strength in the meantime. Right now my circuit consists of kettle ball swings, burpees, bodyweight dips, pull ups, and thrusters, usually done for 3 sets. Every 2 weeks or so I'll add another set.
