Try this Ryan...heat oven to 425. Take a dark cookie sheet and cover it with foil. Break up the kale leaves into chip size pieces and scatter them on the foil. Drizzle with olive oil and push them around so each piece is mostly covered. You don't want them soaked, but you also don't want them dry. Add some seasoning. I just use a little salt and some crushed red pepper flakes. Bake until crispy. Usually 10 minutes or less. They are pretty good.

    Nice run, Hook.

I have a gait analysis with a specialized running coach (whatever that means. I just know the white coat doctors are not helping me any) today as another step to figuring out what the hell is wrong with my feet. I hate running, but I'm determined to do it because my wife and daughter love it. I usually can't get a mile in before at least my left foot goes numb. Usually by mile two my right foot begins to go. I want to run a 10k in June which would be kind of a big deal for me. I hope I can do that pain and numbness free.

Good luck Matt. Are you sure you don't have some nerve issues in your back causing the foot numbness?

As for me, I am not real big on running but it is something that is great for my health as I age. My right knee in the medial area has been hurting as I have arthritis from knee injuries. I went out and bought my first flex shoe the other day and I am going to try it out. I am hoping those shoes force me into a better foot strike and my calves take more of the brunt of the running as compared to my knees when I use the bigger, bulkier shoes.

Here is the latest diagnosis. Two past injuries are catching up to me. A separated right hip, and reconstructed left knee. Those two injuries, over the years, have caused me to walk and run differently. Mostly, to compensate for pain or too protect the injuries. In the long run, I was doing other damage without realizing it.

So, the short version is I now have weak glutes and tight hips. I use my calves and feet too much to propel myself forward, instead of my quads, hamstrings, glutes. The over use of my calves and feet have caused tarsal tunnel. The tarsal tunnel is causing the numbness. Not to mention I get serious tightness in my calves that becomes pretty painful. If I can learn to run properly again, it should lessen or eliminate that. That is the hope anyway.

I've had gait analysis numerous times by foot doctors. The current doctor I'm seeing does not wear a white coat. He is a former US Olympic bobsledder and D2 running back. In other words, he is an athlete. He also deals with injuries and understands the want to continue doing athletic things. Foot doctors have told me, "if it hurts, cut back or don't do it". Thats really not an option for me. So I've always just tried to work through the pain. I made more progress in the one month with the new doctor than I had in 10 years with white coat foot doctors.

The new doctor suggested I get a gait analysis done by a trained specialist at a specialty running store. The foot doctors always perform the gait analysis of me while walking. They have never asked me to run. My foot strike is different when I run than when I walk. I imagine this is true for a lot of people. So long story short, I've been wearing running shoes suggested by the foot doctors based on my walking motion. The hope is that if I wear running shoes based on my running motion, it will help. Makes sense to me.

    That was a long explanation.

Good luck with the feet issue. I will also try the kale baked as you said. This morning i had...a fruit assortment and kale juice. It wasn't all that bad.

Yep, a simple change in one's gait can start a host of issues. As for me I am dealing with extremely tight back muscles. I, like you, had prior injuries and they have caused me to walk a little different. The end result is some of back muscles have shortened up and can really hurt like heck. I have been aggressively working on strengthening not only my back but my core. Even though I feel a little better I know it is going to be a long, hard, painful process until I am pain free....I hope.

Being 38 hurts. Wrestling against people who want a piece of you at 38=even more painful. Oh well, bring it!

Just started lifting again just under 30 days ago, it feels great. I used to be big into it, but I stopped for 3 years. Been lifting/running 1-3mi 5 days a week.

My new school schedule is allowing me to get back into a workout routine. I am not going to be in as much as before, but enough to make a difference. Good thing too because I've put a little of my weight back on and really need to buckle down.

I hear you on the foot impact, Vito. I had my gait analyzed by a prominent running/shoe store about an hour from here back when I started running cross country in high school. I have very different strike when walking vs. running. I underpronate when running, but have a pretty normal strike when walking. Ever since then, I've been able to get into shoes that are best suited for this situation, and I don't buy from big box stores, I always go and get fitted.

No updates, just continuing running three days a week and lifting three days as well. Trying to make better dietary changes, since my wife is also trying to do the same. I'm not a fast food guy, but I don't eat enough fresh and organic foods. We're making efforts to purchase more local produce, as well as opening the possibility to starting a garden this coming year.

Got a 10K tomorrow and a 15K Bridge run next month. Okay... I've never run an organized race before. I run a lot but don't race... we'll see how it goes. Finishing on the same day as the start of the race is my goal. So set your sun dials ladies and gentlemen....

I went 48.08... twelfth place overall. Not sure if that is good or bad. Made the mistake of getting water at the 4 mile mark and instead of drinkng it... pouring it over my head. It was nearly 80 degrees... bad mistake... took my breath and I thought I was never going to get it back. Anyway, I had a blast... I certainly have a lot more training to do if I am going to make it through a full Iron Man next year.

Yep same here. I really need to get in a steady routine and stay fit for my future job (firefighter) but my schedule worked out nice this semester where i can get my work outs in mid morning almost every day if i want and when ever on fridays since i dont have class then :woot:

The rec center here is really nice i will have a chance to switch it up from the track to treadmill type machines , weight machines , free weights and also a rock climbing wall and 2 pools to pick from. So if i feel like im getting bored with one thing after awhile i can go right on to the next.

Planning on running my first 5k the middle of next month. I used to be a decent runner while I was in uniform. Went on my first run tonight to get ready, a short one, 0.97 in 8:38. I'm about a minute off of my last one mile pace from the last APFT I took over a year ago in Afghanistan. Hopefully after getting back into it, my time will be about where it was before I left.

Set a firm goal because that is just how I am wired. At age 38 I will be competing in my first jiu jitsu grappling tournament in 8 years this coming June. My son and I are going to travel down and hang out the day before by going to the movies and having fun at the hotel. I am hoping he will compete as well but I am not going to sign him up unless he asks me. I have been back on the mat for two months and have taken some beatings to get back to average proficiency. Right now I am starting to make some good gains in technique as I am in good shape and can focus on the art of brazilian jiu jitsu and not on collapsing.

Good luck with it... short runs are great to get back started. Watch the hip flexors, ankles and knees. An eliptical machine can really help with your endurance without the pounding.

I found a cure for running.

Go to your local tire dealer that deals in tractor/backhoe tires and pick up a used tire. Flip that sucker 10 times in one direction and then flip it back again.
You will not want to run and if you are like me it takes 20 minutes and gets your heart rate up :tu:

    Oh yeah

I ran the NOLA marathon a few weeks back. It sucked. It was hot, humid, and windy. I finished around 4:05, which was really disappointing.

No more road marathons for me. From now on, I'm going to stick strictly to trails.

In pretty good shape right now. I put on about 5 lbs of muscle here in the last 3 months. Up to about 220 right now. Doing jiu-jitsu for about 5-6 hours a week plus some lifting/sprints/conditioning. I am getting there.......
