Oh so close hooker. Still a pretty great time though! How far out is your 50K? Right now I am still on the fence about a September marathon. I am going to do a 25K trail race at the end of July though.
Anybody else on here do any serious lifting for mass? Too many pages with not enough time to go back and read.
Mass, no. Strength, yes. Never got into the bb scene. Though, sadly my lifting days are pretty much over now.
I don't go for the body building stuff, but I like to do a strength/mass deal. Not trying to enter a contest or anything.
I used to be a speed, strength, and mass guy. Now, I am a cardio and repetitive strength guy. Different phases of life and different goals cause one to adjust.
I've run into a problem with many of the pulley racks and machines as I can pull the stack and as many 45lb plates (2) that I can pin on the stack. With that being said I am doing higher sets to failure and also doing a lot of drop sets to failure. My main training partner used to be a body builder but does high rep/ high weight reps so I have adapted but with more weight than he uses. Now if I can just get in line with the diet
Sounds like it's time for you to either move on to solo training and on to different lifts. Never been a fall of machines, even though I do have a lat/row one in the basement gym. But, it never got used much because I did nearly all my lifts with free weights.
I have blown out to many joints and have had a lot of torn muscles over the years. Free weights just aren't kind to us as we age. I still do a lot of bicep exercises with dumbells as well as shoulder and some chest. The last time I went for my bench max I ended up not working out for over 6 months with a torn shoulder that still gives me problems.
Free weights are just as safe to use at any age as machines are. The difference is being smart enough to know where your limit is so as to ensure you're doing proper form and hitting all the muscle fibers targeted with the lifts. No need to do max lifts if you're not competing or have no desire. My comment about moving on and training solo is that you two sound like there's differences in training styles and end results/goals. Therefore, one or both of you is compromising your training. As to injuries, believe me, I'm all too familiar with them. Between blown rotator cuffs that I couldn't get fixed healing improperly, auto accidents and internal health problems, it's frustrating to say the least.
I'm thinking of getting a more modern hip work out gym. http://image.lampsplus.com/is/image/P0001.fpx?qlt=75&wid=245&hei=245&fmt=jpeg
I will take benching on a Smith Machine over Free Weight Benching any day. Never been hurt on the Smith, have a safety on them if needed and don't have to watch weights fly off if I blow a shoulder A lot of people get down on machines and cables but I have made some of my best gains with cable crossovers and overhead extensions, etc. by using them. At the end of the day I could care less anymore about finding my bench max and the high weight/ high rep is working out.
I made huge gains with one of those when I went back to school. My six pack turned into a keg and I put on 40# of mass, hahahaha.
i use to love running but due to a bad left leg received 2005 Iraq (2 sugeries+ two 50mm rods in the ankle) i am limited to doing my cardio on a elliptical or bicycle. never been a workout nut either but love to throw the weights around a bit. i miss running though.
Back in the day I lifted hard for strength. Genetics really didn't let me get too big, but I was pretty ripped, so that was cool.
