as one of those odd folks who has had an insane number of pet reptiles, and worked with some hot snakes, i am calling BS.
the largest rattle snake (crotalus) on record is an eastern Diamondback ( Adamanteous, just think adam ant e ous) at right under 8 ft and she of 30 lbs. the snake in that picture is about 8.5 ft long and looks to weigh close to 50 lbs.
eastern diamondbacks western most range is in lousiana. so i cant see it happening.

and it is very very highly unlikely that snakes have stopped rattling due to pigs eating them. pigs will of course eat them but i dont think in the numbers required for evolution to take place...

That's scary stuff Donnie. I don't play around with rattlers. I like snakes for the most part and only kill the ones that can kill me.

What's even scarier is the rattlesnake that was killed in the Goshen Pass area of Rockbridge County several years ago, which is just 20 minutes north of my Virginia home. They "say" its the biggest rattle snake on the east side of the Mississippi. I quickly searched the internet for a pic but couldn't find one.

It's every bit as big as the on in the picture you provided, possibly bigger.

Cody, I was born in Rockbridge county and lived there until about 6 years ago when I moved to the Roanoke area. It sounds like you may be from Botetourt County. I didn't realize you were that close and for some reason thought you lived in NOVA.

Anyway, I've never heard of that rattler that was killed but will definitely look into it. Thanks for mentioning it.

As far as this particular snake goes...I'm not sure if its a hoax or not. I'm not doubting it one bit though.

I'm actually from Bath County, Donnie. Rockbridge is more East to me than North, but for some reason I always consider it North. I'm less than 10 minutes from the Rockbridge line and just about 15 minutes from Goshen. What part of Rockbridge were you from? I played a lot of baseball with guys from Buena Vista when I was younger and we always played Rockbridge in sports when I went to Alleghany High School.

Are you familiar with the Arnolds Valley area of Natural Bridge Station? Thats where my parents currently live and where I grew up. Tons of national forest up that way. Do you still live in the area or was I right about you currently living in NOVA? I think I may have asked you before.

No photoshop, it was killed in Cooperville, Georgia, the snake measured 6' 6" inches and was killed in July of 2010. As was said above the story was in our state hunting magazine (GON) or Georgia Outdoor News. I am not computer save, but someone can post a link I am sure. The picture makes him look alot bigger than he is, although at 6'6" he is no slouch. Because of the size he "appears" to be, many internet stories surfaced, much like that of big buck kills.

If I remember the article correctly, the snake was killed trying to escape, and they said the age was about 20 years. I think they also stated that for a snake to get this big they would have to be reclusive (it was trying to escape not attack) in order to avoid humans or other animals wanting to kill it. Again I am going off memory.

That snake was not killed in July of 2010, those pics have been around for at least 3 years now.

I apologize if I spewed mis information, but i can assure you that picture ran in the Georgia Outdoor News magazine, that is not an enquirer or in touch weekly. It is a state magazine with a spin off in Alabama now with one of the largest truck and buck contests in the country. I will do my best to post the link...Phillip if you are out there lend a hand bud, as you have the computer savy I do not have.
