I am feeling a little better today so I decided to take a walk across the street from my house to check my trail cam and had two long beards there yesterday afternoon for about two hours. Hopefully I keep feeling better and can get in there this last week and put one down. I have one more week of season left before the year is over!! See how I feel over the next couple days!

Yea it sucks, I ditched the camera gear about half way through season and started running and gunning. Seems like every day birds were in different areas then the day before, just could not get to them...I've tried my ground, a friends private ground, and about 4000 acres of public ground....

I think im going to even leave the blind at home to be more mobile. just have to look for better cover to hide in and wait for the perfect time to draw. I gotta change because what im doing isn't cutting it. tomorrow we start our last two weeks being able to hunt all day.

It can be done! I killed my first 9 Bow birds with no blind. But wasn't carrying camera gear then

Well guys, I'm sorry I haven't posted hardly at all. Been busy with ending school and being busy with a new job. I managed to tag out, but had no luck with the bow. I'll give you a run down of my season. Youth season came and I had two young hunters lined up. Called a nice tom into 30 yards, which my girlfriends little sister missed, but it was an amazing hunt and I was so proud of her for sticking it out. We had plenty of fun and seeing her eyes light up when they gobbled was awesome, I'm sure she's hooked. The next day I took out my little brother and called one in to ten yards...gobbling...strutting. But in my little brothers defense he was on the other side of some minimal brush and being unaware of the abilites of the Longbeard Xr's, he elected to wait for a clear shot, which never came. Can't blame him for passing on an unsure shot. We hunted hard and called that tom close twice more in later days but no luck. So along came May 1st, regular season opener, and of course I had a final for school in Syracuse, and opted to stay in and study, reluctantly. Got that out of the way and headed home to Western New York to hunt them the next morning. Had on gobble on the roost at 5:45, but shut up as soon as he hit the ground. Waited for a while with nothing going on so I decided to get up and move to another corner of the field waiting for him and his hens to come out. Well whether it was luck or skill, I don't know. I managed to get a hens response and got her fired up and coming my way. Walking fifteen yards to my left in the woods, I saw her and another hen walk right past me and following behind was a big old blue and red head. He got behind a tree, I swung and flopped him and a pretty good sized tree. Not how it normally happens but I was ecstatic and couldn't of been happier with his 6-inch beard, and knubby spurs. This was the start of working on taking pictures with my phone when no one is around. My new turkey vest works great for a tripod.

A week later I was able to hear some birds roosted where I had never heard them before. I took note of where I "knew" they roosted and the next morning I was up at 3:30 and walking in. Got all set up and when I thought it was light enough, gave them an owl hoot and to my surprise they were about 100 yards in front of me and not where they had been in the evening. Gobbling non-stop after that, They flew down at 5:55 and I had one bird break off from the group and head towards me. Every time he gobbled on his way in I could see the steam come out of his mouth. I shut him up at 40 yards. To top it off he had inch long spurs and a 9 inch beard. Oh and did I mention it was my 20th birthday. It was a hunt that I will NEVER forget.

The next morning, after my girlfriend asked me to take her on her first turkey hunt, so I happily woke up at 3:30 and we got in the woods early. Now I don't know if its a women thing but my girl needs her sleep, so after 40 minutes in the woods with no gobbles, she decided turkey hunting wasn't her thing. She was about to quit when I spotted a tom with two hens strutting in the field across from her house. I convinced her we should try it. We put a stalk on them and she saved us by grabbing me when she could see the strutter's tail fan right over the peak of the hill from us. We set up, her sitting at the base of the tree and me standing behind the tree so I could see the birds and still talk to her. After calling and getting a few responses from the tom, his hens decided to come check us out and so he followed them. The passed to our left and with us setting up in a quick spot, Sydney could not see the turkeys at all, but I could. The moved down into a swail about 60 yards from us and I decided we should make a move, so we belly crawled to a point where I could see the tom strutting. I told her it was now or never, knowing his hens would soon pull him away from us. She popped up over the hill, and dusted him at what ended up being about 70 yards. It was a lot farther than I had thought and if I had known it was that far, I wouldn't of had her shoot. But the tom did the death flop (Longbeard XR's again) and we proceeded to dance around like little kids. It was an absolutely amazing hunt that couldn't of made me any more proud. The season ends at the end of may and I hope to get out and help those youth hunters get a late in the season gobbler.

I still have through the end of the month but not looking too great. Damn weather won't cooperate. Freaking rain and more rain. Out of the last three days I got one short sit in between rain storms :( Birds are there just hard to do with a bow and camera gear in the middle of flood waters lol

But I haven't given up yet, looks like I may have a couple of windows so we shall see :)
