Looking to go camping anywhere near VA but dont want the average camping tent site. Anyone point me in the right direction?
most national forests allow you to "wilderness camp". Which means you can just walk out and camp wherever you want as long as you are like 50 or 100 yards from an established trail or a body of water.
Just got back from Colorado where we drove down a dirt road and found a nice spot next to a stream. I won't camp anywhere else but back woods sites
I enjoy making my own campsites when I'm in the bush. Takes a little bit of work, but if you're packing light and want to be mobile then these small personal sites off the beaten bath are the best.
I do all levels of camping... from wilderness backpacking to state/nat parks with electricity (which I don't use). I'm unsure what you're really after... less people? more of a challenge/backcountry/situation? advice on places to go or how to actually do it? are you prepared for camping without electricity and a toilet seat? in general, the more remote the area, the less people, but you're more likely to run into unsavory locals who don't want you there... especially in the east, I suspect. Like mentioned above, out west one can theoretically camp anywhere on public land unless specifically prohibited, but I suspect in national forest lands of the east, camping may be more restricted? you'll have to investigate. I know nothing about VA, but just looking a google maps, what about the George Washington National Forest in western VA or the Monongahela National Forest in eastern WV?
Most of the time I go camping, it is not in an established camp site. I think it is more fun camping out in the wild. However, I live in the west where there is a ton of public land. When I was going to school in New York, most of the land was private, so I only camped in established camp sites.
Every time I camp. Just drive down a dirt road in the NF, pick a spot and set up. Or sleep in my topper if im Solo. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I537 using Tapatalk
Yes. Everything from backpack to out of the back of a pickup. For Virginia check out the hunting and fishing regs, p55-56. Primitive camping is allowed on WMAs and National Forests.
