how long does it take a deer head to decompose, because instead of boiling the head and all that junk i decided to just cut the head off and leave it hangin from a tree. how long would it take?

I have a elk head from 8 years ago that still has hide on it... I'm going to boil it sometime this winter.

Plus mice and squirrels like to chew on racks for minerals....

My advise, borrow someone's turkey fryer and boil it outside so you don't stink up your house.

Put it in some water, change the water every once in awhile. It will take about a year, then put dish soap in water for a day. Then add a touch of bleach if you want it whiter. and there ya go. All together about a year, but make sure you skin it and get everything off it you can before you put it in water. That's how my taxidermist told my brother to do his.

I haven't tried this with a deer skull, only a fish head, but look for a fire-ant nest, and feed the bastards your head. They should make quick work of any meat and brain you have left, then you are ready to clean it up.

Boil it man, it only take 6-8 hours if you hang it depending on weather and critters it would take long and you won't have a good looking skull after the weather will ruin it plus critters might knaw on the antlers.
