But the plants do that feed them and make their antlers grow....

Awesome brother. Enjoy every minute. I'm looking at about 14 more years until I'm able to retire. Lol.

Yeah deer hunting with a compound bow really is not that hard, I guess it depends on where you hunt.

Not saying anything about being a better hunter, it is all about location that and hunter densities. Living on the land I hunt is a huge advantage. I also feel very fortunate and appreciate what I have, it was a lot of hard work and over 10 years of effort to make it what it is.

I very much enjoyed your post OP and agree as well. So many sites are all about the net score, the size of the "G2's" and putting down those who would shoot a "lesser" deer rather than pass it up to grow. They are fixated on QDM or whatever plan they follow to grow big antlers, while putting pressure on themselves in the process. Well I was talking to a buddy on the phone last night about bowhunting and reflected that I seem to kill two bucks in a season and then go on a mini-drought where I only kill some antlerless for a year or two. If my life was ruined on the slim buck years, I would give up bowhunting. I enjoy DEER hunting and keeping my freezer full, with antlers a distant second. Of course I like to take a healthy buck as much as the next guy, but the places I have access to are not "honey holes" and I don't fixate on hero photos to the point that I put my family relationships on the back burner as some proudly proclaim. Good thread and food for thought......

Great thoughts. I am looking forward to hopefully making the memory of getting my son his first deer this year.

    Very nice post OP.

Sentiments like those are very thought provoking for me personally because every year I lose the battle of trying to get out and get in the woods to hunt more. I enter every season with the best of intentions but it just seems with work and projects and family I just never get out and hunt very much. Last year I hunted all of one afternoon. I killed the biggest buck of my life but still... I hunted once. Certainly the absence of a buck tag in my pocket after September 26th made it easier to justify not going but I still had plans to "just get out and hunt and relax and shoot a few does" and it just never happened. Other people killed deer along the way so I had plenty of meat and I just never got out and hunted again. Sure I was involved with scouting and helping friends and family get on deer so I was still participating and enjoying that aspect of it but that just isn't the same is it? There is something about sitting on stand with nowhere else to be but right there in that moment and enjoying the peace of it all. Unfortunately I've come to realize that whenever I am fortunate enough to shoot a buck my overriding feeling is <now I can relax>... why is that? That isn't really how I should feel. I am not required to check off a box before I can relax and enjoy myself. I am blessed to have phenomenal hunting spots. I am blessed to have the health to even be able to get out and be a bowhunter. To really enjoy those blessings I have to get out there and actually hunt. So here I am with a new season approaching and the best of intentions in my mind once again. I hope this year will be different... buck or no buck.

You have no idea how much I am going to regret having to sit out this season (lumbar fusion back surgery 3 weeks ago). I may go out with a camera a few times just to get my fix. I don't own a crossbow or any guns I can hunt with or I would probably use one of them. I won't be able to shoot my bow in time to be in hunting condition to even consider it. It was to be my first season in Texas and I was really looking forward to it.
