I started running last January and even ran a few races. It really brought my fitness level up. I started to learn what my body needed for fuel for those long runs. Excercise(lots of it), nutrition, hydration, and rest(lots of this too) will go a loooong way. Good luck!
Over the past several years I have gotten into really good shape & eating really healthy. I feel so good because of that. Physically I don't really wear down, although consecutive long sits in the cold can really get to me, I need lots of food in those situations. The rest is staying mentally tough. I've stopped stringing together more than 4 days of all day hunts. That is about my breaking point. Especially since it's likely to include either driving 1.5 hrs one way, OR sleeping in a semi-heated camper for a few nights.
Me either but I do become EXHAUSTED! I take off a lot of time to hunt and feel guilty if I don't hunt every oppurtunity that I have. In doing so, I get really worn out. Even for a good month after the season ends. Maybe I should take some of the above mentioned advice.
Red Bull gives me wings. I don't approach hunting the same way you guys do apparently. If I'm heading over to our 50 acres in wi, I'm on the road at 2am to get over there in time for an all day sit. I grab a red bull, a gas station burrito, and a tin of grizzly wintergreen and head down the highway. I eat the crappy processed prepackaged pies for lunch, in fact the only decent meal I have is dinner, when I'll fire up the grill and have burgers or brats. I try and stay healthy during non-hunting months, because during those magical 3-4 weeks from late october to mid november, I don't have time to eat things that are good for me.
I pretty much mirror Mike on this one, my eating is very good at work but the weekend goes to poo! I also drink plenty of water even on stand. I hit the Gym 5 days a week and rest on the weekends. It does wonders for me,,,,plenty of energy!!
Hard to beat a good night's sleep for me. If I need to wake up early (4:30ish), I have no problem going to bed at 7 or 7:30 if possible.
sleep and my workout supplements. Also two of my favorite people in the sport Cameron Hanes he really changed the way I hunt and Dan Inflant making me want to hunt my crazy spots on public land where only 10 or so deer get killed all season.
I guess there is someone here that can relate to my schedule! LOL!! I'm a 911 dispatcher for our county, 60+ hours a week right now, and also a volunteer for my local fire dept/ QRS service. (I'm an EMT). So, I don't have time for exercise, but try to catch some zzzz's when I can!
I stay active through the season which helps keep my energy up. Weight training, plyometrics, cardio, etc. I don't do it specifically for hunting, but if I stop, I feel a noticeable drop in energy. And if I'm just really tired, I use this. It works great for me.
Do most golf courses close that early, or do you close early so you can hunt? The courses around here don't close until we have consistent snow on the ground.
