Why don't we drop all laws and make it retroactive so we can release the thousands of inmates in prison? Thoughts?

I hear you, trust me, I agree, but I'm trying to think of realistic approaches

My point pretty much mirrors TEmbry's.

Marajuana is a huge import drug that the US is wasting their money on by fighting it. Just legalize it and put a more focused effort on fighting the severe drugs.

Of course it will be difficult, Cartels will begin to export more illegal drugs for profit, but it could be controlled. The US actually has to put an effort toward stopping them instead of just talking about it.

Legalization of drugs, really, really. How many heroin addicts or meth heads DIDN'T try weed first. It's all bad.

    I'll ask again:

Does everyone believe that the current system for drugs in the US is working?

That's a poorly way to word this. Working how? Compared to another country? There will ALWAYS be illegal drug use in every country in the world. There will always be junkies. My stance is that by legalizing these hard narcotics, we are giving our youth the impression they are okay and similar to tobacco, alcohol, or heck I'll even throw weed in there. They are NOT. They are much more addictive, mind altering, and life changing. I've had close friends and family whose lives were destroyed by their dumb choice to just try meth once. Cocaine as an occasional party drug in college ended another friend in jail for a year. I don't want the generation or two below me to be raised where these drugs are acceptable and legal.

    No, not right now.

We dump millions of dollars into this "war" only to stop a shipment that barely hurts the cartels. Then we have people being thrown into rehab only to relapse as soon as they get out.

    Something isn't working.

There are pros and cons to this complex issue and the uphill battle to contain it. It is like trying to carry water in your hands.
Aware of the reality but hoping for improvements.

Do you think the responsible people will still find these types of drugs acceptable?

Based on the economic conditions in Portugal it certainly seems that what they are doing isn't working for them.

I can't see a country building a strong work force with skilled labor/trades and attracting companies to drive their economy when they are all shooting dope and smoking meth or if that becomes "normal" behaviour.

In the US everyone is apparently entitled to the same things, so to purposely do anything that would potentially increase the number of people that aren't productive in society seems a bit crazy. We are at a point right now were there are nearly as many people sitting in the wagon as there are pulling it and that's simply not sustainable, why voluntarily add more to the non productive side of that equation. Our culture here isn't going to allow people to make bad choices and then self cleanse that gene pool, those that make bad choices simply depend on those that don't. It's reality.

I don't feel hard drugs like meth, crack, and heroine are a good good idea to legalize. I don't necessarily feel pot should be either but don't really feel that strongly about it.......tons of people are able to use it recreationally and still live a normal life. There is no such thing though as recrational heroine or meth use.

I agree but our unemployment rate only includes those on enemployment, not all out of work.

How does Portugal rate their unemployment statistics?

I only say this because our actual unemployment is close to 16% (11%-14% actual unemployment) now. Legalization of drugs would devistate this country.

Can you link their economic conditions with the decriminalization of drugs?

You complained about a neighbor with "tall" grass. Imagine same neighbors being allowed to do crack and heroin in their home, yard or on the street. Would you feel safe raising your daughter there?

I certainly wouldn't. I had a neighor cooking meth and I'm damn glad he's in jail.

Would you hire someone that is a known crack, heroin, or meth user?

How many more drugs do we need in our lives? Alcohol, weed being legalized, every kind of drug one needs at the grocery store and the doctor...and on and on.

Decriminalization of alcohol stopped all criminal activity. There is no longer addicts or people abusing it. No one is over weight from drinking anymore. There are no illegal distilleries in the south anymore wasting law enforecement time and tax payer money by arresting the criminals and locking them up. Children of alcoholics never suffer anymore. Premature births are no big deal, we are saving more money by not having the war on alcohol. I am not sure what M.A.D.D. is or why we would need it? Surely no alcoholics drive drunk and kill people?

I think Hooker has a point it worked with alcohol, so let's try some harder drugs.

    nope

Drugs are pretty to easy to come by right now, even with them begin illegal. Any responsible person will still know that drugs are bad even if legal, just like cigarettes.
