It's hard to be mad at a kid but if she confused an elk for a white tail, I think some more hunter education needs to be done. I'll give credit to her dad for doing the right thing and calling it in. Mistakes happen; own up to them and taking responsibility is a good lesson to teach.

Hmm, I have mixed feelings about that.

A kid killed an elk here several years ago, pretty sure it was Morgan county or somewhere close to there. Ended up being a farm escape and since elk are not a protected or managed species in IL the kill was considered legal.

Missouri re-introduced elk several years ago at I think Peck Ranch CA? It could have been part of the herd that was "let out"??

I do too. Some of what Jedi says, but probably little harsher.

This has always been my understanding of the issue here as well. That's why I said I had mixed feelings about it. If it was not illegal to kill then the kid did nothing wrong and there was no reason to confiscate it. To test for CWD all they need is the head or a brain sample.

I'm not sure I would have reported it at all. If an agent showed up with a tracking antennae in hand, I'd have had some serious questions for the MDC.

I am not a fan of Elk being reintroduced to MO. I think that was an extremely dangerous and ignorant move. Deer do more than enough property damage as it is. The department claiming they'll keep them "contained" is utter shiite.

Although one question I do have is should an elk have been where the kid was hunting? I don't know Missouri at all so no idea. I wouldn't even consider educating a kid deer hunting where I am about elk cause there's a better chance of a UFO sighting than elk. Responsibility of education is on the dad. I'm being a bit nice with my comments for the kids sake and not to just bash the dad. If there's no legal action against them, it may encourage more people to do the right thing. But on the other side of it, ignorance shouldn't be confused with innocence.

I am sorry but when I was 14 I could tell the difference between an Elk and a Whitetail
Good thing someone's horse didn't walk by otherwise she would have shot a big "doe"

That's mainly what I was hinting at. I doubt anything like that was taught in hunters safety, dont remember it being s topic here in Illinois. My problem is more with the continued teaching that went on at home and the encouragement that was given out on fb. Or the excuse of ppl being jealous amd would have done same in that situation so dont criticize. Now granted you can take most things on fb with a grain of salt but one of the threads I saw whst appeared to be this young lady defended herself in the comments saying how she aced the safety course yadda yadda. So for me thats a second hit on the parents for either allowing this young lady to engange with and agruge on social media or one of them was answering for her on her account.

My feelings on the situation are if you don't know what your shooting at you probably shouldn't be in woods alone. Especially as a 14 year old. Now I know there's idiots every year that shoot cows, horses, or make highly questionable shots on deer and my opinion is no different for them. I also don't believe ignorance of the law or lack of a law is a excuse. At the very least any hunters ed is goin to tell you what species are in the state your hunting or again the patents should. So along with not knowing the difference if, say if, thats the case. You dont go blasting away and then find out of its alright.

Idk don't really care either way what happens, but hopefully this young person isn't sent out on her own again without a little coaching.

:poke:I'm guessing the antlers are why she thought it was a big whitetail and not someone's horse

There are elk in Arkansas. It could have easily crossed the state line. If this part of Missouri is close.

I am from Missouri. The herd that was reintroduced was around Shannon county. Boone county is some 200 hundred miles away. The herd is not fenced or contained, but is monitored I am sure. I think the little girl isn’t at fault as much as her father. I will say I was in the woods at 14 by myself, but not till after I spent so time in the woods with my dad.
