Hi everyone. I'm looking to go on an elk hunt with some family members and was wondering if any body can help me out with an out fitter that will pack u in to a camp and let you hunt on your own then come pack you back out. Any state in the lower 48 will do for now. I'm just trying to get some ideas for next season. Any suggestions?

Shaneb21, guess since you are looking at 2015, you have some time to do some research. Given that, where you go will be narrowed down slightly given that some states require some preference points to draw a tag. However, states like Colorado for example, have plenty of over the counter tags making your planning somewhat easier. States like New Mexico, have a draw system however do not award preference points to those unsuccessful in drawing a tag. In New Mexico they also increase your odds if contracted with an outfitter. so with that here is what I would say could be a check list to help with your search. 1) Set a budget however include cost of travel, tags and the outfitters. Do not forget food and drink 2) Obtain references, not just a few names but get a list of ALL the hunters in the past few seasons. Keeping in mind elk hunting is challenging but merely ensuring what is being said is delivered. Having repeats is a plus. 3) ask them how they came to use this outfitter, was it someone they knew 4) contact the local office to see how many outfitters have a permit to guide that area. going with the expectation that you will not come home with an elk is a something to keep in mind. Elk hunting is a challenge in its own, however finding a good outfitter may not only increases the chance of being placed in good elk country while not being over run with hunters.
Elkhuntingnut is spot on with great advice. The only thing is add is research and look at topos of the area your planning on hunting. Lastly have a way of communications to reach the outside world in case. Otherwise, have a blast! You will be addicted.
