Well, we have one week to go. I hiked up to 12330 feet on Thursday. Although we saw sign all the way up, there was more and it was freshest at the highest levels. Everything is still very green and it was very warm. The mosquitoes are terrible. There is water everywhere and every creek is running high. (bring some comfortable waterproof boots) The elk seem to be in very big groups. We saw a group of aprrox 120 elk in the same field together about a week ago. I'm getting stoked. We have plan A, B and C. We will see how it goes. The rut should be getting into the early stages in the next few days or weeks. Good luck to everyone.
Nothing like saying elk season is right around the corner...hard to believe...but looking forward to it again this year.
Hope you guys have a great season this year. No elk hunting for me this year, maybe next year though. I can't wait to hear from all of you about the hunts.
I've never Elk hunted before but it seems like a blast. My next duty station is Carson and I'll try to get it done. A little DIM hunt.
I was going to leave on Thursday to make opening day in CO but I had some stuff come up and won't be able to go. Now I'm heading west on the 16th, hope the are bugling by then.
I think you will have a better chance to see the rut after the 16th instead of opening day. The muzzle loaders will be finishing on the 18th. The muzzle loaders tend to stir them up pretty good.
I was hoping to get them in their regular feeding pattern before anyone else got up there. Maybe next year.
The blood is pumping!!!! Heading up Friday night, spending a week in the mountains. I will give you guys an update when I get back!
Now that will keep me checking back for information. I spoke with my buddy today out there and he said that the meadows are green as green can be. Hopefully by then the temps start to drop...plenty of time to do that.
Three weeks to go for me! I've been looking forward to it all year but now I'm starting to get the jitters.
