Don't use a mechanical on elk. Use a strong and very sharp cut on contact broadhead.

No mechanicals for elk. Too much can go wrong, I learned this the hard way.

I have hunted them a few years and had some luck. I have used slick tricks before and had luck with them but always get ansy to try something else. It sounds like I will just stick with fixed blades.

A buddy of mine killed a few elk with the G5 Tekan, the last one I was with him on died within sight. What makes a mechanical good enough for deer but not good enough for elk? Is everyone worried about it not making it through a rib, the head falling apart, not opening, because if this is the case why not be completely against them for all game?

    Yeah, DON'T DO IT!!

The only mech that I would even consider is a "cut no matter what", like the NAP bloodrunner. But really I just don't trust them with such a large, tough animal.

For me this all goes back to setting yourself up for success! Can you take an elk with a mechanical? obviously, yes. Does it add one more thing that can go wrong to a situation that already has a bunch of things that can go wrong? Yes.

    Just my .02

A mechanical will kill an elk but with all the hiking and moving around you do there is a greater chance of part failure. If you are sitting in a tree or a ground blind waiting for one to show up I believe you could use 1.

Before you buy anything. Go to Trophytaker.com and look at what Dan Evans has to offer. This guy has killed more trophy bulls than anyone I know. He is an elk killing machine and builds a lot of great archery equipment. I just swtiched over to his Shuttle-T Lock Broadheads...I'm using 125s and they fly amazing, I can't wait to use them this season. I just got done visting with Matt Alwine of Trophy State of Mind Tv and Matt and his staff love the Shuttles-Ts. They killed a ton of critters out west here on film last year with this broadhead and Matt said to me, not a single issue or complaint.

I will add this, at 40 yards I am blowing through my YellowJacket Broadhead target.. 3-6 inches of the arrow passing all the way through the target and sticking out on the backside, and the yellowjacket broadheard target is not small! I have never even come close to this type of penetratin with past bow and arrow set ups.. I am shooting a new Destroyer 350 @29 ... FMJ 340s and the 125 heads.. This combo is ridiculious I can even shoot my Glendell buck with these broadheads it blows all the way through it.

I had heard the shuttle t's shot well but haven't tried them myself. How do they group at farther distance like 50 to 60?
