I was watching hunting university and they were hunting elk in Wyoming. They were using a tree stand and I was shocked. I thought most people spot and stalked or sat in a blind for elk. Do a lot of people use tree stands for elk?
I've only seen that tactic employed while its still hot in the early season and it's usually a stand hung over a water hole. I'd say for the most part elk hunters typically use spot and stalk, and then seal the deal with calling to get them in bow range.
Treestand hunting Elk is much more popular than some may feel, it is very widespread, 1000's of hunters hunt from treestands & ground blinds every year. I have a good friend that wrote a book on it last year, it's a good read too. The nice thing about treestand hunting is hunters choose what I call "destination" spots to set stands. These are areas elk plan on going to or using without any coaxing. Most elk hunters that hunt elk in Sept & most of Oct rely on calling for both location & in crunch time. I've sat many evenings in a stand over these destination spots, they are great leg savers when you put tons of miles on in a day & day after day. There's some true skill involved in treestand hunting elk successfully just as much so as knowing how to call elk successfully. There are many do's & dont's in both cases. ElkNut1
We have two stands over wallows and one in a saddle where they cross regularly. We do spot and stalk a bit. We do call a little bit from the stands. When we spot and stalk we do a bit more calling. Are bow hunt also starts in the middle of August and ends on the second week of September.
