Are you looking for an outfitter and if so are you interested in a guided hunt or drop camp ?

If you are planning on going this year, you will have to look into the OTC units as I assume you have not built any points in Colorado.

If you are looking for (big bulls) you may want to try New Mexico since they do not use a preference point system. When using an outfitter in the Gila Units and depending on your flexibility, odds are not as bad as some would think

There's a website I think it's huntinfool.com go there should anser most of your questions and there are some good outfitters there. Right now about the only place you could go is Colorado because of the aplication process.

Check out when you have to apply for New Mexico if there is still time contact Jim @ utrail out fitters in Glenwood NM

You say you want a Big Bull? Define Big Bull. This can make a huge difference in States of interest to accomplish your goal. Some feel a 280"-300" is a big bull & it is. But to others it's a 340" class bull or bigger, that will take a special place to hunt as well as a special tag in most areas to have such an opportunity!

If new to elk hunting then any 5-point may seem big to you! So help us out & I'm sure you can be steered into the right direction! (grin)

    MNpurple, thanks for the comment!

Octhereicome, A P&Y bull needs to score 260" or so points for Rockies, that is according to statistics is better than average, so a bull in that 260" class to 300" class would exceed average! (grin) I assume this is satisfactory? This is an average 6 point to be had in most normal units!

If so this outfit here can help you & your Dad in this dept.-- I believe their costs are aprox 3300.00--3400.00 for each hunter if 2 are with one guide, the hunt is in Montana. This is a good solid outfit & one to be considered for a fully guided archery elk hunt.

    Hope this helps!

That price includes your hunt & all the amenities such as all food, horse for packing & shelters. It can be from a base camp to a spike camp. Your best bet is to call the Outfitter & get their explanation on exactly what it includes. No Outfitter supplies Elk tags unless specified, there are some that can work a package deal depending on area & State.

A general tag price is 550.00 to 900.00 just for your elk tag. All these things must be taken into consideration but I do know Two Bears offers a very good elk hunt. No matter the Outfitter used let them know you are interested in a P&Y caliber bull, they then will know you are looking for a 260" bull or better, this will help them to help you evaluate elk you do come across.

For the record, the bull in those photos I shared is only a 250ish bull, he would not make P&Y. Now you know why I asked what you considered big! (grin) Good Luck to you son!

Thanks for the kind words, I'm just an Elk-Hunter & an ElkNut like many here on this Site! (grin) Once you start hunting the rut & are into Bugling Bulls you're never the same after!! (grin) I've heard thousands of bugles over the years & I sit here chomping at the bit in wait, waiting to hear my next one!! It's addictive & there's no cure!! (grin) Thanks!
