I'm planning on hunting Elk next yr in Idaho. But it's not because OOOOOHHHH it's elk. It's just something different to hunt. I've hunted for Muleys in the past. I'd also like to hunt for antelope, carribou, & moose sometime in my life. It's variety!
I've elk hunted once and though I was not successful at killing one(never even got a shot), the scenery, wilderness, and overall experience will never be forgotten. Though I won't trade the whitetail rut, elk hunting is just well.......terrific! I'll be back someday.
Yet you complain to me about never having seen one. THere was your chance. I don't understand how someone COULDN'T be engrossed by elk. They are unreal. I need to start working on going every year. Bears are on my short list too.
It was just the wrong time of year, I would go in the spring.... BTW I shot a 162 inch buck while he was in Canada on "my" trip. :d
Although monster whitetails excite the hell out of me, I truly wish I lived somewhere that I could hunt the elk every year. I'm not sure I've ever been so excited as when my bull elk was buglin down my neck at 33 yards. I just have the hunting BUG. I was heavy winded and adrenaline pumped when I shot my black bear and I come unglued when at full draw on gobblers. I just love this bowhunting thing so much that it doesn't matter what the target is, I'm pumped, unglued and excited.
I guess I take it for granted that I can elk hunt every year if I choose. While I know I could, I didn't even buy a tag this year. I just haven't gotten into it, yet. I know I'll eventually get the elk bug, I just haven't yet. This year its Mulies. Next year I plan on buying an Idaho antelope tag. I'll also be putting in for moose, sheep, and goat tags here in Washington. Elk is an OTC tag here, so I guess it doesn't hold as much appeal to me as it might to some others. I'd like to get some other animals under my belt first, I suppose.
