I had been given the opportunity to start writing on behalf of Collegiate Outdoors about a month ago, but with work and a few online classes on the side, I've not had a chance to write anything for them yet. This weekend changed all of that, my best friend, Cody Likins, killed the buck of a lifetime, and just so happens to be a full time college student at EKU. So I've been given the opportunity to interview Cody and write a story about him and his recent bow kill. Hope y'all enjoy the article, and pass it on to others. As stated in the article, he has to wait 60 days to get this buck officially scored, but a rough gross score of this buck has been measured at 204" inches typical. EKU Student Harvests Potential New State Record Archery Buck (Typical) | Collegiate Talk
WOw. 204" is far from a world record, from what I saw it is being debated about a Kentucky state record after the 60 day official score. I don't know why so many people have the idea in their head that a 200" deer looks like an elk... Congrats to the young hunter!
In 200" class typical deer, 10" might as well be a mile. A remark was made in an earlier post about it not looking like a world record...I was simply pointing out that no one in the article that I read through seemed to be making a claim that it may be a world record, just a state record. Besides the buck in the article isn't an actual typical racked buck like the Hanson buck, it isn't going to net that 204" and especially considering 60 days dry down.
Many of us just dream of seeing a buck this large let alone fling at arrow at one. Awesome buck and a good job putting him down.
That is a great buck but I think there is two problems with the story. Those split brows are not going to score as typical points so the net will be well below 200" and as a main frame 10 pointer you have to have some crazy long tines and that buck does have GREAT brows and G3's but it doesn't look like the other tines are long enough to get to 200 inches. Like I said though great buck anyone would be proud to shoot.
There's apparently a misunderstanding on this forum alone. I've posted this article on numerous different forums, and this is the first I've noticed asking the same questions or making the same statements. We never claimed the buck was going to net 204. This buck has been rough grossed or green scored, whatever you would like to call it, at 204 inches before deductions. He isn't even close to the World Record, but he's going to be within a few points of beating or just below the current state record here in Kentucky. We're anticipating anywhere between 13 to 15 inches of deductions. In regards to the buck, based on the pictures I was one of the first to tell Cody that it looks like a 180 inch deer, but it's much much bigger in person. The photos don't do this buck justice. He has great mass, 27 inch main beams, and great brows & G'3s. Hope this clears up some things in regards to the article.
The problem is in the title. Potential state record. The state record is 204 2/8 inches and even if that buck green scores 204" he is going to loose a lot in deductions. Like I said and everyone else said it is an AWESOME buck. Maybe your title should be one of the best Kentucky bucks ever killed not something it has no chance of being.
No sense splitting hairs and titles ... great buck and write up for it. Congrats to the hunter and everyone involved! Nicely done all the way around. Thanks for sharing it!
You must not be tilting your head right when reading the title, it says EKU Student Kills Potential State Record Archery Buck (Typical) Those two words are important when reading it, because the State Record Archery buck that's typical is currently 188 inches. So, therefor the title is actually correct.
Why are you guys so fast to pick out every little detail that may be wrong with the article? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Maybe I missed something or maybe the title got edited but I get what JKL is saying. I see this buck going in the 170's somewhere. Net score anyway. He's going to gross well over that. Awesome buck!! Congratulation's Cody!!!
Honestly, I think with a gross of 204 or around that neighborhood, he's definitely going to be in the upper 180's still. I've held this buck in person, and pictures don't even begin to do him any justice.
