I just ordered a 50lb bag of Egyptian Wheat. I plan on planting several screens to help keep my plots secluded and to allow me to get in and out without busting deer. Does anyone else on here plant screens? If so, what have used and what have your results been?

I've only had to do minimal screen planting at our homesite property...however we regret not doing them at our other property we hunt. This year I'm hoping to get some EW, if not I'll be doing some hybrid sorghum screen planting. It all depends on the design/shape and area the plots set in...I like secluded safe feeling plots with as much cover and sight line blocking as possible. I've thought about doing just some islands of EW or Hybrid Sorghum in my plots to do what hopefully in a few years our planted evergreens or shrubs will be doing.

I have done Egyptian Wheat screen for the past two years with great results. Plant 8 to 10 pounds per acre, ferterlize with 46-0-0, and use Simazine for weed control. The drought last year didn't seem to affect it much. I got 12 feet of growth when I planted at the end of May, 9 feet tall with the July 7th planted seeds.

Thanks for the info. Did you drill the seed, or broadcast it?

when i planted mine I sprayed round up where i wanted to plant to kill cool season grasses, spread Urea (46-0-0) then tilled it in, then broadcast the seed on top, finished it by rolling it in with a lawn roller behind the 4 wheeler!

I tilled the ground first. Then I spread urea (46-0-0), then I tilled the urea in. Next I spread 8 to 10 pounds of Egyptian Wheat (per acre) seed down and very lightly disced it in. I finished up by packing it down with a roller. For weed control, I sprayed Simizine once right after I packed it down. I have done this 2 years in a row with good results.
