I have a very nice pond on one of my pieces of property and with all the acorns falling it is a sweet setup.
I set one of my stands over a pond too. Bunch of red and white oaks right behind it, alfalfa field right next to it, should be good.
Tony, That's an indication of how much stress is on the Vegitation.... acorns falling early... Late season will be Tough for food, crops not great. How Stale is water supply? Water not moving here...Stagnent! Strange year!@#$%^&*
Last year was a strange year because of the heat, this year it's because of no water. Mother nature needs to start cooperating!
People will have to adjust....gauranteed! Find Water!!! Screw the food....they want and have to drink! So do I.....coffee!
Tony- everybody's right. The main thing is water! I'll bet you are not still as dry as we are in south texas. But we have been thru this many times before (in my life). But, what i have found out in drought years, that the deer know how to overcomb. They have to eat more forage that actually has a higher protien level i.e. Mesquite beens and leaves. We have actually taken bigger bucks in theese years. But!!!!! The main thing is keeping water on the property which i am fortunate enough to be able to pump it down to cattle troughs. Hunt the water holes!
Treat water holes just like food plots. Don't hunt directly over them, find the travel routes between them and bedding areas and hunt there.
In reference to the devestation in Texas I though it appropriate to comment: Rain or shine you need to know either way prepare for your hunt. I've been using ScoutLook Weather for a while know and it's the most accurate weather for hunting I've found. They just launched a new APP that's even better b/c I can take it out in the field with me while I hunt and it has some new features. http://www.scoutlookweather.com/mobileApps.php
Leaves are dropping, and they are using the beaverdam crossing I overlook Aside from the forrest fire blazing to the East of here, I just assume it stays dryish for a week or two...
