hunt the wind... hunt the wind... hunt the wind... More big bucks have been killed by hillbilly's wearing stinky work clothes then everyone decked out in $500 worth of scent control gear combined. I cant sit for more then a few hours without needing to eat or drink. More comfortable I am the longer I can sit. I will only hunt a stand if the wind is right though. I even piss out of the stand. But I will also only hunt the same stand maybe 3 to 5 times before I pull the plug on it and move at least 100 yards to avoid burning a spot out.
If you ask my wife, she'll tell you I'm part vulture and always circling the kitchen for something to eat. That doesn't change when I am in the stand. I'll typically pack a variety of things to eat, but I will make it as quiet as possible. Candy bars will be opened up and all placed into one ziploc bag, and from there I'll maybe have a cut up apple that's already pretty much bite sized so you don't have that loud crisp bite sound from a full apple. Trail mix is another popular one with me because it's filling and again once placed in a ziploc bag, it's not really that loud either. As far as drinks go, I'll try to have water instead of pop, but if I do have a bottle of pop with, I'll open it up once before I even start my walk so that the breaking of the seal isn't heard around the woods. If I'm stuck with canned pop, I'll open it and pour it into a bottle at home or in the truck before heading to the stand.
I like taking full apples with me. The crunch doesn't bother, and when finished I throw the core into the kill zone for a little bait.
Here in Minnesota that little bit of bait will net you one large fine, up too including losing your vehicle, bow/gun and anything else if they feel like it. We have a zero baiting policy here in MN. I'll leave the cores at the house. lol
I take a few things into the stand with me depending on what i am hunting and where. For example if im in the canadian bush for an all day sit, i have a reuseable water container (tupperware plastic 1 L bottle) and a few sandwiches or maybe some leftover fish fry from the previous evenings meal. Hey every little bit of attractant scent helps rights? Now if im deer hunting ill have some pre-sliced apple, granola or some un-wrapped apple flavored jolly ranchers. Id rather make a little bit of noise with a snack than be worried about my stomache making alot of noise! Sent from my SM-G935R4 using Tapatalk
I have heard from somewhere that your mouth omits most of your scent. You should eat apples because that smell doesn't spook the deer. BHA
I'd agree with that. If you think about it, our mouths are nasty until we brush out teeth in the morning, then naturally changes depending on what we eat or drink throughout the day.
Apples trail mix coffee and water. When I used to chew I would just do that but I gave it up a while ago. I don't know if the deer smell the coffee but I do try and not open my thermos during prime time.
For those who use zip lock bags ... I have found that the sandwich version is thinner plastic and much quieter than the freezer versions especially in colder temps Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
This would be great for Bear hunting! Get them in real close! Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I'll take 3 or more pb sandwiches, mixed nuts, 3 or 4 Cliff bars (oatmeal or peanut butter) and some presliced apples in zip lock bags for all day sits. I'd much rather have too much than not enough. I'll also take 3 or 4 bottles of water and "reuse" them as needed.
I rarely ever eat bUT when I do its like apples, natural foods. Peanut butter is good too. Deer love peanut butter.
...but they hate cinnamon, like Tigers (The Hangover). Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
If I take food I take apples or nuts to eat and water to drink, only something natural. I much prefer to leave the stand to take a break, eat, and take a nap or stretch my legs and then return to the stand, though. But my stand is only a few hundred yards from my cabin so it's a luxury that not many have.
