The BAR is designed to be used with broadheads that use compression to hold the blades onto the ferrule - such as the original Thunderhead. They aren't "needed" for any other types of broadheads. However, they do save the end of the arrow from taking the brunt of the impact each time you shoot. Over time, the carbon has a tendency to get very small stress fractures in it. I've never had this be an issue, but it does happen.
Just purchased a dozen Easton Axis 5mm. I tried to get as close to 400 gr as I could and still have some flat trajectory for my short draw. They came in at 385 gr. I think that will give me a good balance especially since 98% of my shots are under 20 yds. I believe this will be just fine for the Rage Hypodermic +p. 1.5" cut with swept back blades.
I shoot the regular Easton Axis 5mm with 50 grains of brass up front and have never had any problems with them. They blow through deer like its nothing.
