We had a warm weekend here in MD (Low 60's), so my buddy and I decided to try one of our favorite rivers yesterday. Water temps were mid-40s, but they water clarity was great, especially for this time of year. I wanted to try out my new drag chain and Sony Action Cam mount that I built for my kayak. The drag chain worked great, but I need to make a few minor adjustments on the video cam mount. I will post videos once its working. Ended up pulling out 13 total anywhere from 14-18 inches. Definitely one of the best days we've had on this river in terms of size and quality of fish. Here are a few pictures (the 18+ inch came off as he pulled it into his boat)...the season is quickly approaching and it felt good to get out!
I love smallie fishing. You ever try Confidence Baits.. I know they're based out of MD and the guy who owns it has loads of vids on youtube with his baits while fishing from kayak.
We usually don't get out until May either, and we were both a little skeptical on how it would turn out. Once that first one hit, it heated up for a good 2 hours. I've never heard of Confidence Baits Duke, I'll have to look them up.
Awesome stuff. I was supposed to go on a river float trip this weekend in northern Arkansas to try to catch some smallmouth as I've never caught one, but apparently building and hanging a valance for the baby's room was more important.
I know sometimes there are bigger priorities, but next time you have that chance, I'd jump on it. Kayak river fishing for smallmouth is one of my favorite things to do. They fight like they have a chip on their shoulder.
Sport fishing in Wisconsin is over now till early May. Cool that your kayak fishing. I have never done that but want to give it a try. Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
Awesome, congrats on a good outing! That mid to high 40 degree water for prespawn smallies is one of my favorite times of the year. I'm at least a month away from that, but I can't wait. Congrats again!
Thats awesome man! I was hoping to get out this weekend but still waiting for the call from the shop saying the boat is ready. Was a great weekend to be fishing rivers!
I just clicked on your website link for the first time and read the brief article on Pre Spawn in the Adirondacks and chuckled when you mentioned "slow-rolling" the spinnerbait. Take a wild guess as to what worked for us. Slow and Low!
Sweet ! I'll be getting the boat out this wkend on liberty or Prettyboy. Can't wait Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk 2
If I can get some wind chop on the water, spinnerbaits are one of my favorite for early prespawn fish.........I can always get more numbers with a few other methods but I always get better size slow rolling spinnerbaits that time of year. I can't wait.......almost pulled the cover off the boat this weekend but decided to give it another week or so in case we get a mid/late march storm. I'm hoping to be on the water in early April.
We have a slight cold front moving in this week and the temps won't be back up to the mid-50's until late next week. As long as the nighttime temps don't drop too much, the water should stay around the same as it was. The other thing about yesterday that I thought was curious was that the fish weren't in their post-spawn/summer locations. We pulled fish out of areas we skip other parts of the year.
If youre in the area and wanna hit the river sometime let me know. Should be going a good bit this year and its always nice to have someone else on the boat.
