Do grunt calls work early season (now), or will it just spook them?

Yes, they can work. Don't be afraid to try something new. I've called bucks during the early season w/ grunts...it works!

Worth a shot if the deer isn't coming in...I only ever call if it's obvious the deer isn't interested in coming my way.

yes but I hate blind calling. wait until you see one and give a couple short "pops" these are communication grunts. If you do a long grunt that's a "tending" grunt and it's too early for that. If the bucks have started to spare then I think you would be better off with a rattle bag. Lite clicks no banging. They are not fighting head on yet. Again, I don't like blind calling unless I'm up on a hill with a bluff at my back. I don't like the idea of a buck circling down wind which they WILL do if they do not see a deer. and if they are looking in your direction and you don't see them you might call again and then you would be officially busted. Good luck.

Heard a buck grunting last week while around other deer. Think it just social communication. Grunting can work anytime just better during rut

Had a doe walk past saturday. She kept stopping and right before she go to walk again she'd let out a little grunt. Did this about six or seven times... Weird, but I'd say yeah, it could work.

From my experience they will work early in the season. I think it is more of a social response or curiosity thing if they respond. Later in the season the response is more rut related. I only use them when I have a deer in sight so I can watch their response and act accordingly.

I have grunted in young bucks this time of year but never a big one. Did it with very light short grunts.

Nothing wrong with blind calling, i have shot the majority of my big bucks blind calling. I would not recommend blind calling this.time of year though

Thursday morning, I had not seen anything for the first hour.. I began some soft grunts and as I was in the middle of it, I saw movement above me about 30 yards.. It was to late to stop as I was in the middle of my grunting, and I noticed that she could have cared less.. She continued to feed on acorns and fed down to me..

Friday morning, at first light, I heade grunting from what sounded like 3 different deer ( slightly different pitches and one behind the other) going thru a thicket in front of me.. Lasted for about 15 minutes. As if they were grunting as they were moving..

I am all for soft grunting.. they communicate year round and its not my mental telepathy... They grunt year round..

I've grunted in four bucks this year. All small bucks and they weren't too interested. Might not be the best thing to do for a big buck but might as well throw a few light grunts if he isnt coming in. I just like picking on small bucks when there's nothing big in sight.

I had an encounter with a big deer opening day and he was about 50 yards out. I grunted soft a few times and he didn't acknowledge me. I gave him a louder pop grunt and whipped his head up, stared in my direction for a few seconds, and put his head back down and kept feeding before he walked away. I've never been able to call a deer in with either a bag or a grunt.
