I shot a fawn on Halloween morning about 11AM. Judging by the fawn's reaction after the shot, I knew I must have made a bad hit. She ran out of sight and I got down to inspect my arrow. Couldn't find it. So, I found the point of impact and found what looked to be stomach matter. I looked a little farther and found some good dark blood. I then thought I may have hit liver too, somehow. I backed out and came back at 4:30 with a buddy. We thought surely the little fawn would be dead. Nope, we jumped her out of her bed. She ran a little ways and then we could hear her walking in the leaves. I decided to let her go overnight. I went hunting the next morning and got down at about 10AM. Started looking for my doe. Ended up calling my buddy back to speed up the process. I found blood and stomach matter on a trail leading through a very thick thicket. We followed it and found her dead in an old logging road. I believe she died about 10 minutes after we jumped her out of her bed the previous day. I believe this because we heard her walking up this trail and she died at the end of it. We just couldn't believe she had lived that long. I was also shocked to see the entrance and exit holes. I thought I had hit her farther back but in all reality it was just a tad low of where I was aiming. She was 40 yards broadside from me. We didn't even field dress her. We quartered her out and salvaged what meat we thought was good and then disposed of her. It was probably one of the happiest moments of my hunting career, believe it or not. I found the deer that I had made a "bad" shot on and she was also my EAB ticket to my target buck. Upon quartering "her" out we discovered "she" was a "he." His "boys" hadn't even dropped and they were about the size of lima beans. We also could not see or feel buttons. I know it's small but I was getting desperate.:D Good eatin' though. Anyway, here you go. Tell me what you think of the shot placement. Why would I find stomach matter from this shot or do I just need to study up on my deer anatomy? Entrance Exit
oh man, that looks like a guinea pig with long legs. I'd say good shot, but closer woulda been better, but at least you got your buck tag.
First Finchy, Good shot and smile for crying out loud. :d Now the shot, that's a very good question on the stomach/food matter. Same thing with Matt / PA's doe down in NC. He smoked her, came exit and by the looks of the arrow we strictly thought gut shot and backed out. We went for breakfast and found her not very far away. The arrow strictly said guts but that wasn't the case. Matt had someone tell him that this time of year or then, when the gorge themselves on acorns it backs up in the esophagus etc.. It sounded reasonable to me. By the looks of this photo, you smoked her too.
I was too tired to smile. :D Thanks for posting that pic Rob. That's very informative. I still don't see how I found stomach matter. BTW...I have some Rocky Mountain 2 blade snypers on the way. I bet this guy would have been dead hours sooner if I had a snyper equipped arrow.
That could be true, my Snypers put great holes in them as do the Rages. You have her/him that's what counts now, good luck on your buck.
hey you found him, took what you could and another deer/notch in your hunting belt. cant wait to see what big boy you knock down next!
