Herein lies the root of the problem. The unions believe they are actually worth twice as much and have convinced their members of the same.

Ha! Not many union guys in the 47%. Most of them are making WAY too much to be in the 47%. :p

The "union" "nonunion" debate will never end as long as we have a working class in America, and we will never agree on the validity in their benefits.
Just as America has always had men with unbridled ambitions and dreams, we also have always had those whom are happy to ride the wave and live in security and anonymously within the flock.
Neither of these two groups will ever be swayed in their beliefs that the other is not simply a by product of the others needs and desires.
As an individualist I fail to understand why any man would limit their potential achievements and rewards to the constraints of the average employees capabilities within my working parameters. To me its the same thing as making it to major leagues and then when its your turn at bat, being told you are only allowed to bunt.

In my first post, I have was simply trying to defend the working people ..just so happens they were union. Management should at least accept some of the blame for a contract that hasn't been settled. I have worked both sides ..I still work almost daily with non union persons. I have never downgraded, never said anything even derogatory on here or anywhere. I know they are just people trying to survive in this mean old world. I'm new to the forum world and have tried to stay atl least somewhat polite, yet I've been called a parasite, freeloader, and have somehow won the lottery for the lame..i like that one:)
I realize a few angry people's opinions don't speak for everyone. I also realize, it doesn't matter what % management gets for a raise (in my own contract talks) but I am in the union so we are going to negotiate. Again ..just trying to look to look out for me and my family. I also mentioned "fair wage" what i should of said was a competitive wage. I'm only talking about here ..where i live the wages for a journeyman Lineman. There is not much difference between non and union ..some non is more, some union is more.
If i did own the company and had a great bunch of people working for me, I would do what i could (incentive wise ) to keep them happy. If its not in the cards for a raise so be it..good employees will understand. If the money was that important ..i would look for another job, union or non.
I never drew a line in the sand between the two. I WAS SIMPLY TRYING TO STAND UP FOR THE WORKING PEOPLE
I am still proud to be a member of the IBEW, glad to even have a job..I guess I'm just a proud person. Nothing wrong with having a little pride.

Good post. Where things get convoluted, is where you mention that good employees understand when a raise in wages or benefits is not possible. Unfortunately, a lot of union stewards dont have the ability to have such clear thoughts. They have one thought process.....more is better. Always more. That has been such a recurring pattern in so many industries that it has given all unions somewhat of a black eye.

No comments on my part directed toward you Polecatmasten. I didn't know you were a union guy I just thought you represented them in some way. I think you get our point though. The only time we hear about unions is when they are going on strike during peak season to demand earlier retirement or something. The fact that they are in bed with crooked politician to squeeze more money out of tax payers also rubs us the wrong way.

I've always said I love to see all business owners go on strike for a week and shut down all private corporation and see what the world would look like.

Thanks for you straight forwardness polecatmasten and for keeping it real.

The two union guys I know well, are making closer to twice that. That may not be the norm, but its what I have first hand knowledge of. Also, over 5 kids seems a bit extreme. I would think they would be committed to an institution long before the 5th child was born.:lmao:

Not a big fan of unions, not a big anti-union person either. I can see both sides. Performance evaluations shouldn't be a part of the union, though, imho. You shouldn't get keep a job if you have a poor work record (performance, attendance, etc).

There's a reason Wal-Mart is super against it, because they don't have to give their employees anything. Part-timers working 50 hours a week, with no benefits, making $9/hr, etc.

Again, I can see both sides.

Pay based on performance and ability is the only way to fly. BUT, we in this country have just about done away with that ever happening. Yup, the unions and all that have been the major driving forces. My son works for a firm that is totally performance oriented. The managers rate every employee from top to bottom under them. You can't have 2 number 1's. You have to pick a number one and so on. If you end up in the lower percentiles... well you're probably gone. You may get one more ride to see if it changes... but you better perform. Those who perform are paid well. My son's year end bonus in July was what I call crazy money. No way is anyone worth that.... It's not union... it's put up or shut up. Things get done.

Back to the original post... "I was duped by a union". No... you were inconvenience by an employee/employer dispute. Really, the union didn't do it to you personnaly. It was business. Maybe not good business for you... but that's what it was. I know.... it sucks.

But if your company is union you have to pay the guy $100k to clean your toilets or the whole staff will quit on you and again being union you can't hire others.
    Smart or dumb?
