Dry Fire Mishap (update) My brother used to shoot on an indoor league many years ago. He came to visit this week so I showed him my Mathews Monster. When he went to draw it with fingers I suggested he try pulling it using my release. "Nah, I never used a release I shot with fingers". So he pulled it back to an anchor point, aimed then started to let it down. He got to the break over point when it slipped off his finger tips! AAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! He feels terrible and I know it was a genuine accident the question is do you think there was any unseen damage? It appears that the only thing that happened was the string jumped off the top cam. Other than the cams what should I look for? I'm bringing it to the proshop tomorrow.
Axles could be bent, strings may be damaged, run a cotton ball over the limb and make sure there is no splintering......beyond that the Pro-shop should be able to shore everything up I hope. I'm not a big fan of letting people "try out" my bows for that reason, though I can say the couple times my bows have been dry-fired...once by me with a splintering arrow in my face, and once by a friend, everything was fine, no real harm was done....
yep, Doug hit the nail on the head... break it completely down and roll the axles on a flat surface; really look at those closely. Run a cotton ball over the limb surfaces too to see if it catches any splintering that the naked eye won't pick up... and check the string really well for fraying where it got slammed up against the cams. I just don't like letting anyone draw my bows with their fingers... just bad stuff right there. Had a buddy of mine over the house last month who owns Onestringer Arrow Wraps and he wanted to pull back my new BlackOps Destroyer 340 with fingers... I let him, but boy was I a nervous cat the whole time. I actually helped him let it back down from full draw as he's not used to compounds (his business is named Onestringer for a reason; he's a trad guy). Probably won't let anyone else draw it with fingers and without an arrow loaded ever again.
I have heard far too many stories that end exactly like this one. I just will not ever let anyone draw my bow without a release and an arrow on the string. Just isnt going to happen. I do hope your bow is unharmed. Good luck.
That stinks Same thing happened to once but luckily nothing got hurt. The one shop I go to has a trufire deal that is a non firing release. It just has a deep solid hook, no way to dry fire with it.
Got back from the proshop. Had it looked over and then shot it. Everything is fine and it still is dead nuts on. The only thing I need to watch is some of the serving got mashed.
B&B? They say why they quit the Quantico location? There were always folks in there when I stopped by... Shame. Glad your bow is fine. Sean
I stopped by B&B and they're GONE...bummer! I had to go to Alexandria to "Bowe's and Arrows" he's a Mathews dealer. (see PM)
That happened to a friend of mine. BEWARE! All looked fine, but 1 week later after having the bow checked out by the dealer he purchased it from the top limb exploded while shooting 3D. You just never know what could be going on inside the limb material. Hair line cracks, stress fractures, etc... NEVER PULL A BOW BACK WITH OUT AN ARROW!! PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND TALK TO MATHEWS.
