Driveway length. What's "too long?"

If coming off the existing rented farmhouse only requires 500ft of additional power line why not the same for a drive?

I didn't read all replies - but PLEASE from a volunteer fire fighter/EMT - if you are going to have a long driveway make sure it is wide enough and clear enough to get an ambulance and fire truck down it.

People get upset when we cannot get to their house - but they are the ones who didn't allow us. Weather it's tree branches or just too narrow.

    Always a thing to remember!

It's steep. It would require a lot of switchbacks off of the already long driveway to the farmhouse.

I'm looking at close to 3/4 of a mile for a driveway, one thing I found is tar and gravel or "chip" and gravel is half the cost of asphalt.

Think of the amount of pets you will save by being farther off the road. Our farm driveway is close to 1/2 mile doesn't take much longer to go up and back with a 3 point snow blower

Plus if you are in the woods you can go outside in the morning in your underpants to pee if the bathroom is in use.:)

    You're prepared for maintenance.
    Power isn't an issue.
Kids buss stop isn't an issue.
    Price is right.
You're in this site so I'm guessing you like the outdoors and nature a little bit....

Why are you asking us again!?
It's a no brainier for me. Tough to find a piece like that around here, I know if one for sale locally but I would have to raise my kids in a cardboard box to pull it off!

Matt, As I told you on the other forum, 1/2 mile driveway is no big deal if you have a tractor to maintain it. It doesn't take as long as you think if you have the right tools. I maintain 550 feet of my driveway and 1/2 mile of easement. Main tools are for summer: a boom sprayer for weeds, 7' grading scraper and a 7' landscape rake (main tool). Winter: for snow, a 7' all hydraulic rear blade with a slotted pipe on the cutting edge.

I spray twice a year to kill the weeds before grading to avoid large clumps of dirt and weeds that need to be picked up. I use just the outside 2 nozzles on my boom sprayer as the weeds are usually on the shoulder of the drive. This take no longer than an hour to an hour and a half.

The grading scraper and landscape rake about an hour a piece. Scraper is only used when potholes are present. You drive slow with these two implements or you could get washboarding.

Snow plowing don't take even a 1/2 hour on the easement. Two passes as fast as you can go. With snow, speed is your friend.

If the driveway was relatively straight it wouldn't bother me too much, especially if you have the right equipment

Thanks, guys. We will see how it goes. Has the potential to be a great spot with good hunting right out my door.

Hey, Pink Pony I agree with you, if the driveway is long enough without any bends or winding in between then, make sure it is wide enough and clear to get an ambulance and fire truck down it. According to me 3/4 mile for a driveway is enough to go through, that too with Asphalt, including tar and gravels combination. When I was confused about constructing my fronthouse driveway, I Took help from driveway paving frederick md from their official site.

That aint to bad. If the price is right, privacy can go along way. I'd personally do it.
