I work with a few guys that have there bows set on 50 lbs and they say that there's no need for a bow set any higher than that what do you think
50lbs will surely kill any deer around just as dead as higher poundage. Ask guys like Fred Bear and recurve/longbow shooters. In terms of compound bows, todays bows are much more efficient at transferring stored energy into the arrow thus creating more kinetic energy. However, there is one exception that I can think of. What if that shot isn't perfect? You hunt long enough and you'll almost surely make a less than a great shot, maybe hitting a shoulder bone, etc. The higher poundage can mean the difference between a recovered animal and a wounded one. The most important thing is to shoot at a weight that you're comfortable pulling in hunting conditions. This means cold temps, stiff muscles and heavy clothing usually. You might be able to pull 70lbs at the range, but that weight will feel like 90lbs when you've been sitting in a tree all morning in cold temps, not moving. I personally hunt at 64-65lbs. In the off season, I'll crank my bow up to 70lbs to condition my muscles. Then back it down a few weeks before season. Makes that 65lbs feel like 60lbs.
An arrow that's heavier and with a higher FOC can also make up for a less than great shot. IMO, at lower DW's the makeup of the arrow becomes more critical because you no longer have speed to make up for a less than well made, well thought out arrow.
I have hunted with 90#, 80#, 70#, 60#, 50#, & 40# bows. There is No need to shoot more than 50# for deer, although I normally shoot 60# anymore. As far as arrows be sure they are properly spined and keep FOC for broadheads at a minimum of 12% and you'll be on your way in the right direction. Dan
like said before...i shoot heavy weight because im not as experienced as many many other hunters and are more likley to make a bad shot so i up the weight so i hit them hard. I get buck fever really bad haha =]
Just a thought, oct.....but, do you ever think you might be more accurate, if you turned that thing down a turn or 8?
Really not sound Logic. A bad Shot is a Bad shot regardless whether you are shooting 90# or 50# Same as Broadheads! A Bad shot with a 2" cut Broadhead is still a Bad shot and I like big cut heads. Unfortunately too many people use them as a crutch Dan
Don't take this wrong but you've got allot to learn there young man. Shoulder blade? Maybe, depends on where In the shoulder blade. The shoulder knuckle? Not happening.
the blade...back part...i know you cant get throught the joint... Aim behind the sholder blade...just saying if i miss by a few inches
I sure don't think you are dumb! I think you have a very high capacity for learning and the desire as well. Why else would you be here? That's a Good thing! I hope we can meet sometime to shoot the bull and maybe a few arrows as well. Dan
I certainly don't think anyone meant, or is even implying that. Everyone has a different skill set, you, me, heck all of us...and we can all learn a little something from each other.
