Ive been shooting at 29" since may now. a guy on the range noticed that after months of shooting, it looks like im not fully extending now.. Rechecking things, my draw is probably about 29.5 or 30 now.

Is it weird that Im comfy shooting a bow that is a little "short" for me?

Is it normal for your draw length on a bow to change as a new shooter with a new bow?

Well for starters don't take advice from the "Guy at the range". I think everyone knows that guy and he has no clue what he is talking about! I see more clueless people at the ranges and it always makes me laugh!

Secondly, it is very possible that your length could change on a new bow but it sometimes gets a bit longer based on string stretch. I have not heard of someone going the opposite direction and it becoming to short. I would just have someone you know well and trust check you out or get a few picture at full draw so we can see!

On a side note: think I am going to try to shoot Sunday morning at the Chain if your free you should cruise over.

Chain O Lakes state park on 173 in Antioch. Free outdoor range with shooting tower and targets out to 40 yards with impact mounds for broadheads. That will be tough with your schedule though I am sure.

I shoot a shorter DL. It's comfortable for me, and I don't have to worry about my bulky jackets in the winter.

It's better to have your draw too short, than too long.

    FYI, I'm 6'2" and shoot a 28.5" DL

I am in the same boat. I shoot 29" as when I bought my bow last year, that was how the shop said to set me up. Ive gotten bad feelings from that particular shop and was not satisfied so I went to more of older tried and true shop yesterday and the owner took my measurements after seeing me shoot on the range. Said I was not getting full extension and to get measured. For my wingspan he the chart said I should be 30-30.5" length. He only had a 31" in stock and my am extension looked and felt perfect on that particular bow.

My draw length according to the charts should be 31". My bow is set for 30" and I have a pretty good bend in my elbow (check my avatar) but it is very comfortable for me and I never have a problem with bulky hunting clothes getting in the way. My previous bow was set at 31" and I didnt like the way it felt.

That's been my thing with it, 29 feels fine and this close to season, I don't think I want to start messing around with my shooting technique or equipment set up

I'll be honest, sometimes "that guy" knows what he is talking about and is just trying to help.

I was in the same boat several years ago. Bought into the leaning back means your draw length is too long.I was down to a 26" draw trying to fix it and then one night "that guy" said to me, your way too short on draw length. I was to the point of causing injury in my shoulder. At first I thought ,who is this guy. He was bold and came right out with the info. I thought I would humor him and see what he had to say.GLAD I DID. Turns out he was a level 4 coach that helped at the olympic training center and was a world class bow tuner.

I proceeded to take his advice and take everything he had to say in. Before it was all said and done,I was out to a 28 1/2" draw and competing at a higher level than I ever thought possible. I am shooting about a 28 1/4" draw right now because my main focus is hunting.28" if I go with my wrist release.

Sometimes that guy is just a know it all that doesn't know anything,BUT he can also turn out to be just what someone needs to get over the hump.

My advice is to take his information in and feel him out like I did. It might be worth it.

God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason.

Does the extra half inch really make a huge difference? ESP side in shooting just fine at 29 ?

I agree with Fitz! I've always been taught that when your draw is too long and you're fully extended it can lead to a less steady hold. I'm 5'6" and used to shoot 28" (I have gorilla arms), I shortened my draw to a 27" and I've noticed better accuracy on longer shots because my hold isn't so shaky. Just my .02!

It's all dependant on the shooter. Bone to bone contact is what most of us need to be steady, but some are better with a bent arm.

    really come on man.
LMAO 2 pro staff target shooters said you look like you were holding your bow short once you short the target bow which was 29 you were at full extension.
you for got to mention that we turned your bow up all the way and your anchor and stance was bad because of the dw.
Ferg a bows draw length will not grow to a noticeable amount do to string stretch.
What happens is once a new shooter starts to get a proper form going they are more comfortable at their true draw length. however there are people that will always shoot a shorter draw than they need just because it works best for them.

I have seen string and cable creep equate to over an 1" of draw length. Just had a friend's bow that was drawing over a 1/2" long because his rigging had creeped.

Maybe I misunderstand the statement but string and cable creep affects draw length a great bit. Especially with some of the junk strings I've seen some manufactuers use.

My son's bow is having new Trophy strings put on now because his draw length had creeped a 1/4" and he could no longer hold the pin on the spot without it bouncing.

I really hate that too because I had it tuned to perfection and season starts September 1rst. But my guy will put it on his shooting machine for me and have it back where it was by mid week.

The front shoulder placement makes a big difference in draw length needed. If your opening your shoulders too much, your needed draw length will shorten. Square shoulders up to perpendicular with the target, draw length will increase.(shoulders perpendicular to the target is preferred by coaches) As a new shooter, your body/shoulder position may have changed.

I tell people to point the front shoulder at the target as you draw.

Another thing that plays a big role is the front shoulder load,it should be down and back. Some people with their bow set too long will extend the front shoulder forward to try to make it work,it looks fine to the average person but a trained eye can catch it. Too short and the front shoulder may start working up and back, this was the issue I had.

To show how much difference these things make, check out these photos of me. They are all with the exact same draw length. This is why it is so important for people to figure their draw length out on their own,but they need good info to work from.

Another thing is how hard you pull into the wall, some like to barely touch the stops and others preffer to bury into them, that can be a 1/2" right there.
