http://doa.wi.gov/secy/documents/final_report_recommendations13.pdf A lot to digest so take your time.
While its understandable that many WI hunters hang on my every word as it related to deer hunting policy and management prescriptions and I have spent considerable time reviewing the final report, I am hopeful that WI hunters can pick themselves up by the boot straps and actually formulate an opinion of their own. Bowhunters are by nature a self sufficient lot so I don’t think its too much to ask that that people here and elsewhere read the report and formulate an opinion. Then I will chime in to let you know if you have formulated the correct opinion. With the 2012 deer regulations already set, we have at least a year to begin the process of implementing Kroll’s recommendations but even Kroll himself stated that these recommendations can take from 3 to 5 years to be implemented so you have time to attach yourself to somebody else’s opinion or God forbid, do the heavy lifting yourself to arrive at a stance.
I just finished reading the whole report. Im not from wisconsin or even rarely do much hunting up that way. However from an outsiders percpective I would say that the Dr's got most of it right. Sounds to me like they are more than willing to get the public invloved in both opinion and manual labor. They understand each sides concerns and are going to use all of the input to make a well balanced plan that fits all sides for each issue (like the bar stool they mentioned). It's impossible to make everyone happy, there are way to many sides but I think they understand it's all about balance. Interested on how everyone feels though.
Rep. Tom Tiffany has released a statement in response to the final report issued by the Deer Trustee and is calling for personnel changes within the DNR’s deer management team. True reform has to be born of a philosophical change if it is to succeed. I think Rep. Tiffany is onto something here. As in business or other orgs or even sports teams, Management shake ups can drive change that would be stifled by trying to enact real change with the same people that led to the problems in the first place. If reforms are to work they have to be managed by people that support the reforms and not those who would do so begrudgingly or perhaps so opposed to the reforms as to act in a manner that keeps the reforms from getting their best opportunity at succeeding. http://www.thewheelerreport.com/releases/July12/0711/0711tiffany.pdf
I was really looking forward to a 5 legged stool. LOL Looks like they have a new committee every 2 or 3 years. Somewhere people got to start doing and not talking. So what are the areas like now where you had all the CWD epidemic? Did they kill off all the deer or are they still trying to or what? A couple of the letters to the good Dr. were interesting. Like they guy from the deer farms who said all evidence of CWD came from wild herds introduced with penned animals. OH well, I'll wait for the RC Opinion Poll.
I have to question your use of the word “ CWD epidemic” In the entire CWDMZ, more than 95% of the deer are NOT infected. The landscape is NOT covered with dead or dying deer due to CWD. Rather than CWD epidemic, perhaps “CWD incidence” would be more representative of what taking place in WI. Sportsmen would agree the CWD management has been worse for WI deer and CWD itself. Killing healthy deer to keep 5% of them from contracting CWD seems odd. They abandoned that folly early on. CWD is naturally occurring in many species. (even human) The cause cant be linked to erecting a fence around them as proved in many states. The argument of whether CWD is frequency dependent or density dependent rages on but nobody in the scientific community has ever said CWD starts with penned deer. Your welcome.
