Yes. Remember, if you shot a nice buck and your buddy tagged it under the group hunting law, he wouldn't have to let you have the deer or the rack. It would legally be his deer now. Hopefully, nobody has friends like that!
wow id be mad if someone else took my buck just like last year i shot a buck and it jumped another guys fence so i went ove rthe fence to retrieve the buck but the guy got mad and said he keeping it sense it was on his property
Good thing you dont live in NC, I can cross any property lines in pursuit of a wounded animal, and you can't do a thing about it. Now, I will ask permission first, but if I get a no, I can still go retrieve my animal with no penalty. If you ask me thats the way that it should be, its completely dumb to not be able to cross a line to retrieve a kill. On another note, I hope you get some closure with the buck IV, regardless of keeping the head, its still nice to have closure. I do believe that if the deer was dead when recovered, you should be given the option to take the head if you want it. I really dont see the appeal in keeping someone elses deer that they harvested, whether it was the same day the animal was shot or a month later. I know most of the people here would give you the head back if they knew you shot it. I just really dont see the appeal of saying, "Yeah that mount there, well that was my neighbors deer that I found 4 days after he shot it, cool huh". That just doesnt make sense to me, but to each their own.
I'd suggest you ask someone else about this (in NC). Not only can you not retrieve your animal (if you ask and you're denied permission)....but, the GW can't, either. If it's posted, you must ask (for permission). The crazy thing about NC is.....you CAN retrieve your animal (without being in posession of a firearm) without risk of prosecution, if the land isn't posted and you DON'T ask permission.
Never heard of the posted rule there Jeff, I have always heard it went the same for both posted and unposted. I do know that improperly posted land is about as good as a cat as a retriever, it doesnt work. Unless the property is posted all the way around the outside to state regs, it doesnt matter.
