You haul all your camera gear up to your stand and after setting the whole thing up and find that you forgot to power it off last night and the battery is dead and you don’t have a spare. And the only other thing that can make it worse is the giant ten pt. Walking right under your stand that you’ve been tryna get on film all season.

Well, that sucks. I guess I over prepare because the battery comes off the camera and onto the charger after every hunt. I also carry two spares with me just in case it's a busy day in the woods. My camera has a setting that lets it turn on/off by opening and closing the LCD screen.

Yup a mistake that hopefully I learned my lesson from. I turned the cam off with my lanc controller completely forgetting to turn the switch off on the camera itself.

After a few years of self-film hunting, I realized that no buck is worth missing to get on film, unless it were my job. I dumped the camera and hunting became fun again.

Which controller do you have that allows you to turn your camera off with the LANC?

I guess I need to be a little more specific. I can turn the cam on and off AFTER manually turning the switch on, on the camera itself.(an HFG30).The mistake I made was breaking down the gear after the hunt. I shut the cam off using the lanc controller. The cam goes off but unless you turn the camera switch to off its still on. I had closed the lens cover and had the viewfinder closed so the cam was in sleep mode and gave no indication of being on. I had disconnected the lanc from the camera by that point. Iv'e been filming 4 or 5 yrs. now and still have the gremlins messing with me. Still double punching the record button and forgetting to turn on the mic are two of my specialties. No audio is as bad as bad video.

Jeeze I have the same camera and controller and I didn't realize that it will turn off and on once the cam is switched on.. I thought it would only turn the camera on from sleep mode. You're saying it puts it into sleep mode as well?

I find the opposite to be true. I use to hunt with an old VHS camcorder 30 years ago. I put the camera away just to hunt. Hunting became almost boring over time. Now with the camera again and You Tube , it's a whole different level of being fun and challenging.

No the cam went into sleep mode after I unplugged the lanc jack from the cam cuz I had the viewfinder door closed and the lens hood shut. I had forgotten to turn the switch off on the camera itself.

I always turn the camera switch on after I’m setup in the tree. Then shut the cam off with the lanc to save battery

Set the whole cam system up in the tree. Mic and Lanc attached and plugged in.Manually turn the camera on by moving the switch on the camera itself to the on position. Press and hold the ON switch on the lanc for a couple seconds. The the cam will shut down providing the viewfinder is open and the camera is manually switched to on. To turn it back on press the Lanc ON button again. When done unplug everything and manually turn the camera switch off.
