I hunt on family-owned land. My Grandmother's farm, and my Uncle's land are a couple places. We have had dogs from as far as a mile away chasing deer on our land. It really sucks when a nice buck, or even a nice fat doe, comes within range and some dogs come chasing it away. Or when there are several deer coming my way, only to be stopped and chased away by dogs. The owners have been asked kindly to keep them in their own yards, by whatever means necessary, but they keep doing the same thing. What would YOU do? After repeated attempts to resolve the issue, is it fair to shoot the dogs? My dog just passed after 11 yrs, but he was kept AT HOME. On our property. Just looking for some outside opinions. Thank you all for your input
I'm not sure. How do I go about checking on that? I hate to do that, but it really upsets me when ppl have no respect for other's property or hobbies. More of a passion than hobby in my case, but you get the point. I respect others enough that I kept mine at home. I didn't want it bothering other ppl or their stuff. Why can't other's respect ppl the same? It's not that hard.
I don't know if it's legal or not to shoot them. I do know in Illinois, it's Illegal to let your dogs chase and harass deer. Maybe talk to a CPO about it, they may do something?
We had one say talk to owners then shoot em. Another one said take em to pound and let em get charged $25 per dog a few times and it should solve problem. Hard to catch em when they're chasing deer tho. They run faster than this old fart LOL
yeah its not fun to do that. I would contact your co! they will have a better thought, I think michigan just recently made it legal to shoot a dog running deer.
Here in Pennsylvania u can shoot dogs that chase deer.If u tried being nice and speaking to the dog owners and they let their mutts run deer,i say shoot the lousey *****es!..Here fido!...here fido! Where is that damb dog?????
Holy crap man i was just getting ready to ask this same ? we have family land that i hunt, we have had this land for as long as ive lived and then about 4 years ago a family moved in literally built about 10 yards from our property line right by one of my best stands. anyway they have like 6 dogs and the chase deer off my property freakin yearly plus the have a freakin blood hound that barks none stop early in the mornin (at least they have him penned up). i can recall a couple situations where i had deer workin their way into range and i have even been at full draw and these freakin dogs come out of nowhere. Ive started keepin a bb gun in my elivated blind and shootin them in the butt every time i see them. P.s do they ever spot you in the tree and sit there and bark at you?
The deer will get used to the penned up barker. The runners should be put down, sad but true! i know its not the animals fault, but we work to hard, have so little time to do what we love,to be harrassed like that. ppl suck in general(outside the family unit) How bout this...put out some trap cages and then take their mutts to the pound it will cost them atleast 50.00 to get them back(thats 50 per mutt)Just an idea.....easier to blast um! and I'm a dog lover and owner...
Is this thread a joke? You guys would seriously consider shooting someones pet because they're chasing deer? Heres an idea, call the local and or state police, aspca or game comission until they handle the problem. In my area of PA and from what I understand in most counties it is illegal to kill a dog/ cat unless it is in self defense. Its called animal cruelty and most end up in jail when caught. No offense, but if my lab got loose and a hunter shot him for the reasons mentioned above, the hunter would end up as a 3-d target in my backyard. I would welcome the consequences.
2 german sheppards got loose, (big, mature, fiesty dogs). My 2 brothers were turkey hunting when at first light a doe came out to the opening they were hunting, when these dogs came out of the woods and chased this deer away. We told everyone around and a couple days later our neighbor "took care of the problem". A pack of mutt, stray dogs were running around all summer then into the fall. In the winter they attacked 2 horses in a barn, killing one and injuirng the other to where it had to be put down. A couple weeks later, the problem "was taken care of'' by the same neighbor. Knowing this guy these dogs were not trapped and taken to the pound. They were most likely shot. Its not the dogs fault, but the owners and its a sad story to tell but PEOPLE HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR ANIMALS. We have 2 dogs, one a 100 pound german sheppard/lab, hes big, black and scary. He does not go out of the area of the house ever. Unless hes with us he sits on the porch and doesn't give a sh!t about anything. We trained him to be like this and if hes not doing that, he gets tied up. Other people need to take the responsibility of doing the same.
Im not gunna kill them i just give them a poke on the butt with a very low powered bb gun (just fills like a pinch) then there gone for a few days. I dont plan on killing them but the trappin idea sounds pretty gud. Im a dog lover and have a lab as well. I would be prety pissed if he got away and someone shot him probably do the same stuf you would do. I was just sayin its gettin pretty anouying.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a dog lover for life. If you didn't catch it in the beginning of the thread, mine just died cpl months back. Big black lab named Pepper. He was part of the family. I miss him a lot. I respected him as well as the ppl I live around. He had a pen that was about 50 X 50 feet. Dog house with 2x4 stud walls, insulated, big enough for 3 grown men to sit inside. He was my baby. He stayed at home. He wasn't running deer or crapping in someone else's yard or stringing their trash all over the place. Mine didn't do it and I expect the same courtesy from others. I wouldn't be so upset about it if it was now and then, or a dog I hadn't seen before, but it's the same ones over and over. We've tried to resolve it but it's done no good.
My dog does the same thing. It's an Australian Shepherd, 3 years old and more hyper than most puppies will ever be. Behind my house is a good place to hunt. I killed a doe last year and as soon as the dog heard the shot it came and chased the doe into someone elses property. I was P!SSED. The only reason I didn't get too mad, was because we couldn't find the doe, then the dog came with us and she found it. So the dog and I called it even. Right afterwards, I came home from work one morning around 8:30 and my wife was sitting on the porch and was pissed and I asked what was wrong. She said around 6:30 that morning she kept hearing the dog bark and went to see and saw 2 bucks walking up the side of the mountain (near where I killed my deer). She said when she came in and got her bow the dog charged the woods and scared it off. To beat it all this is MY dog scaring the deer away and I'm P!ssed. A couple of years ago my uncle shot a deer with a bow and it ran into someones farm and died. He went to retrieve it and dogs kept trying to attack them when they would open the truck door. He told the DNR what happened and the DNR went and retrieved the deer for him. I know none of that has nothing to do with your situation, but if I were you I'd tell the owners this time that the property isn't theirs, and the next time a dog comes and chases your deer off you'll call the dog catcher or something. Say it is dangerous for the dogs to be running behind deer as many people shoot at moving targets sometimes.
I, personally, wouldn't shoot someone's dog. For several reasons: First, in Missouri, it is illegal to shoot dogs chasing deer (and in general). Second, I wouldn't want someone shooting my dog. Thirdly, I like dogs. What would I do? Call the game warden, especially if they neighbors have already been asked to tie their dogs up. They'll have suggestions for you.
I too own labs, a Chocolate and a black, and here's the deal, if I caught MY dogs running an animal they were not trained to run, at a time they weren't to be running said animal, they would get their arses beat! I love my dogs and Reggie (the choc.) sleeps in the bedroom with me and the wifey and Hester (the black ) sleeps in the bedroom with our son Cole, but they can be trained for a purpose. I can and have taken my dogs into the timber on a walk, horse ride, or checking trail cams and have had deer jump and run and both will stop, look, and then sit cause they know what will happen if they give pursuit! Train your dogs right and you don't have to worry. Don't train them and suffer the consequences of them being a target! I have too much time and money into my animals for them to pull crap like this! JMHO
In MN if you allow your dog to chase deer you would be guilty of a petty misdemeanor and may be fined up to $500 for each violation. Between Jan. 1 and July 14, a person other than a peace or conservation officer may kill a dog that has pursued, wounded or killed a big game animal.
We bought our property 6 years ago. The neighbor had 22 dogs, running wild, at one point. To date we have taken more than 15 to the pound, but they keep breeding. It got so bad they were running deer by our stands almost every day, stopping and barking at us while we were in our stands when they werent chasing deer. We tried animal control We havent had a problem in the last two years. It sucks, but those dogs were suffering, chasing deer for food. Weve seen the main female drag fawns to her pups in the spring. We did what we did to protect what we paid a lot of money for. I didnt like it one bit, though.
The dogs I know of that were shot were stray/ferrel dogs. If a dog wearing a collar or just a healthey looking dog did that I would call the game warden. But I don't have that problem around here.
The feral dogs here are a danger to people and animals alike. If and when the situation arises it is handled...
