There is an area where the deer cross a dirt road on a regular basis. They come from the top of a hill, traveling down a slight ridge, down into the grader ditch and across the road at a field drive. I am thinking of putting my blind up on the hill side of the road in the bottom of the grader ditch. Only cover except for some weeds and grass in the ditch is a long string or Sumac at the edge of the field. How much cover would I need to add to conceal the blind more? The blind would not be visible till the deer were near the edge of the field they are coming from. Thinking of cutting off some of the Sumac and sticking it in the ground on the deer side of the blind. Plan is to leave the blind up as it would be protected from normal wind in the bottom of the ditch. Does this sound like a doable set up?
Better check local laws first. In Nebraska it is illegal to hunt from a roadway which by definition includes the grader ditch. It may be different in your area. Otherwise, the plan sounds solid to me. One more thought to share. When I hunt from my dog house style blind I use my crossbow. It isn't big enough for me to comfortably draw my compound. In Iowa, roadway is the normal travel portion including the shoulder. Highway is from property line to property line. No restrictions for bow or crossbow, only fire arms including black powder, etc. I will be using a crossbow. Going to set up a camera first and see what time those critters are crossing. I think it is during darkness but hard to say.
