it's guilt by association. Deer learn which smells mean danger. Or they die before they learn.
A hundred years or so ago, when most men smoked and most houses were heated by fire, smoke smell probably equated to man smell. Nowadays, not as much. The smell of smoke is now likely a novelty (except where brush fires are common, and then its a normal smell.)

My cousin is a deer killing machine, and he smokes like a chimney. Odd thing is he really pays attention to his scent profile in one way - footwear. He swears rubber boots are the key to getting in and out w/o getting busted.

    that's how i de-scent.

the only thing about it is that i can't use my sense of smell (not necessarily because i think mine is any good, but it's just annoying smelling smoke for the first however many minutes before my nose gets used to it)

smoke is actually how my family has been de-scenting for generations.

My girlfriends father leaves his clothes in the woodshed all year round, smokes on stand and has killed a handful of bucks up to 160". Some spots just allow it.

Smoking your hunting gear has been around alot longer than any of us has been alive, like washing your hands with the mud from the lake or the river befor handling bait or lures when fishing.

Indians didn't have scent free soap or deodorant. They sat around campfires in the tepee. Shot deer with slow bows and no sights so they had to be close.
I used to smoke 3 packs a day and killed just as many deer as I do today. I think smoke is a great scent cover. Go into a locker room after a basketball game. Let one person light up and then think about what you will smell.

Im gona try it this season. Im gona smoke it , wash it in baking soda then hang it in my pine trees intill im ready to go im gona do this a couple times a month. Plus it wont carry the harsh smoke smell after the wash and pines but will still be scent free and earth smelling. Thats what my neighbor actually does i talked to him a little more about it. But ill let you guys know during deer season what happens vs store bought scent control.

Smoke works no doubt... BUT if you really want to kill a booner this year just roll around in some good, fresh, moist cow pies on your way to the stand. Boonerfied !
