Some great scent block I too have killed with no scent block on. I think durring rut buck are just focused on one thing and may well walk in on you unaware. However, I have been useing a system by Force Field Pro, www.forcefieldpro.com. What I noticed is that dow are on high alert durring rut and they will spot you long before a buck will. When I use this stuff I have dow around me and sooner or later a buck will follow the dow. I think if you use all three steps this stuff reckomends it really works well. As far as the field spray part of it I only apply it a second time after 6 or 8 hours. More frequently if it ia warm day and I have been sweating. I also apply it again if I have left the stand and gone back to my truck.
I have tried many different ones. I have had the most luck with Scent Killer by Whitetail Research Center. Others I have tried i still get winded.
Yes I have always used scent sprays and was also skeptical if they really worked. However this past year proved that they do. I began trapping coyotes a couple years ago and would make an attempt to keep my scent off the area and didnt have much success. I randomly decided to sart spraying my traps and surrounding areas with scent killer and low and behold my trap success sky rocketed. That sold me. Another note. I called the company and asked what the ingredients were because my dog got into some. Its simply water and baking soda. I havent bought there product since and have been mixing my own. Saves alot of money and is just as effective!
I believe they work, was hunting hogs and i didn't spray myself down watched 2 hogs walk right to the trail I walked in on, they did a 180 and got out of there....also on days I did spray, they walked right across my trail and didn't spook!
Yes it helps. Use scent elimination products, hunt high (20-30) ft and hunt the wind and you will have success.
i feel it works. i use it on ever hunt. i also use scent free soap and detergent as well. i will respray as needed depending on conditions.
No, it does not work. I used to use all the scent stuff and be all worried about scent...until I realized the only thing that really protects you from a deer's nose is the wind and thermals. The only thing I do is wash with scent free dove soap and I see more deer these days than ever before because I hunt the wind and thermals.
ScentLok works. If you review all the studies there is proof. Also years of experience both using it and not has give me all the knowledge I need. ScentLok cannot make up for sloppy scent controlment regimens. For example the guy I work with would put on all his gear then smoke one last cigarette before heading out. Really?
Brett is right on. If they smell you a little or a lot they smell you. Only way to beat a deers nose is understanding thermals, prevailing winds and hunting accordingly. I used to use all the scent control stuff, even chewed some scent lok gum or some similar brand. Just learn to play the wind accordingly and you will see more deer. Your not beating their nose with magic spray or anything else.
Not sure about all the science, but since I started using scent blocker spray I have been closer to predator and prey. I was clothes and self in scent soap, then spray before I leave truck in morning. I have been within 20yds of a cougar, two bears, a coyote and multiple deer and elk who did not know i was there until i moved or shot. never had this many oppurtunities before using. I too use the scent a way brand not to say its the best never tried the others.
I have to ask.... Has anyone ever thought using a liquid spray to help remove scent actually does more harm than good? Anyone that has ever worked with dogs knows moisture is needed to hold and transfer scent. So as dry is its been here in the Midwest I would think you would be better off not using it. Maybe I am crazy... I think they have little effect at best. Scent prevention to me is much more important. Trying to cover up your scent it like spraying evergreen air freshener after you take a dumb in the bathroom. They next guy that walks in thinks... Man, it smells like an evergreen just took a dump! Except with a deer it is 1000x worse…. I feel the same about carbon clothing.... I would much rather use garments treated with microbial silver that are design to prevent bacteria / stink instead of something design to try to cover the stink up /contain it....
I keep my clothes in a plastic bin with cedar and cypress branches, I put them on in the field, and then I spray down with scent-a-way. I believe it helps. I think the deer probably could detect you if they were trained like a police K9 unit. In other words, they probably do smell something when the wind is right. But suppressing the smell makes it less likely that it will raise alarm. If it is a weaker smell then maybe they think it is coming from far away or it is from a human passing by hours before.
