Just a heads up on the Juicer. My wife and I got one for our wedding- not trying to lose weight but just to be able to make homemade juice and it takes a lot of fruits and vegetables just to get 8oz of juice. The concept is great, but efficiency is lacking. The price could add up big time before you see any sort of results.
Is it worth doing the juicing thing for a cleanse or is that a gimmick too? Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Gimmick. You will lose weight, yes, but a good cleanse should actually reset your system AND involve a proper eating plan.
This is also excellent advice imho. I've ALWAYS eaten like this. My friends (and my wife) make fun of how little I consume during a meal "for a guy." However, I'll eat again in an hour or two. That coupled with a healthy consistent weight lifting and cardio regime (with a little genetic luck) and I actually have to fight to put pounds on. I do workout 5-6 times a week, so admittedly that helps as well, but smaller, HEALTHIER portions coupled with supplemental exercise should do the trick all of the time. .
That doesn't work for everyone .... the small meals thing, I mean .... it is what you eat, how much you eat, and how much you burn .... so I suppose it could work if you have control .... but it is easier for me to do less meals ... less temptation that way .... and what does your skinny young *** know anyway :p
Do you guys think I have all the equipment necessary to get a full body workout? I have the folllowing: treadmill, benchpress w/ leg curl and preacher curl, multiple bands, pull-up bar, and adjustable dumbbells. I just need to figure out a routine and which exercises to do. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I'm hating the treadmill...I think I'd use an exercise bike more.
I think what he meant, Tony, was that eating small meals 5-7 times a day increases your metabolism. That is a fact. While eating less food in a day, say two meals, can help someone lose weight in the short term, you are actually slowing your metabolism. A faster metabolism means more calories burned while you do nothing. Sleeping, sitting, looking at forums, etc. But you still have to eat the "right" foods in those small meals. Yes, you have enough. If you could add a few kettle bells, it will open up your opportunities even more. Keep in mind that the treadmill doesn't have to be your only form of "cardio". Doing sets of jump rope, push ups, pull ups, and squats without any rest, for example, will really accelerate your heart rate and keep it there.
I don't know much about juicing but I dated a girl that was into eating raw...yea insert a million dirty jokes here. she had one of these crazy blenders & make the smoothies, which honestly were very delicious. She also made some other "snacks" for me that were made from raw foods and while they didn't taste like the foods tehy intended to mimic, they were dang good. Very delicious. She raved at how much energy she had an how good she felt when she stuck with eating that way. That said I don't think sticking to some sort of off the wall diet is going to last very long, but I do think a person can incorporate a lot of ideas from different areas and use them as part of an over all healthy living/eating plan. For me the juicing & using the blender for raw smoothies was more work than just eating said fruit or veggie.
Actually I was referring to ways to get in/stay in shape...as in weights, running, mountain biking, whatever he likes to do. If you are talking, brazillian butt lift, or the rack, cleansings etc...then yes all those fads are just that...fads. Fitch, get the book the Abs Diet, it is bright orange (there are many others as well). It is a pretty basic read and I think it is a great tool to get started. Most books will use large words that mean nothing at this point. This book is not the end all be all, but it gives some pretty good ideas for food you can stomach. I go to the gym on a regular basis, I change what I lift, reps, weights etc...I change what days I go, I change what days I do cardio etc...I bulk, I cut. I do all of that and none of it makes a difference if I eat the wrong foods for what I am trying to accomplish. Go to any serious weightlifting site and the number one topic is......food Some good thoughts have been thrown out in this thread...If you are serious about this, and I have been at this along time, I advise you to find your nitch and do what you like. That will make it last, and that is the key to it all. It is a marathon, not a sprint. You don't get fat overnight and you won't get healthy overnight either.
Rapid weight loss generally equates to putting it back on in short order because most haven't changed anything. It's the lifestyle change that requires one to lose weight. It's comparable to gastric bypass. People lose the weight quickly then put it back on. I'm not opposed to fasting as I think it can be beneficial in limited durations. But, look into it first. As to juicing, I thought you were talking about steroids at first.
I dont want to get in a pissing match, just trying to help the guy out. A very good friend of mine was given one, by a guy at our gym. We took it home and tried it out...not joking around, we gave it a fair shake. I can honestly tell you that "benching" a 30 lb cage so to speak did nothing for me. Push ups beyond parallel, "bench" dips etc..... I must say I spend quite a bit of time and iron/health is a big part of my family's lifestyle so maybe the rack just wasnt for me. As far as Finch is concerned, he just needs to read up on eating habits, and decide the route he wants to take. Finch....just an example. I am currently 6'2 and 221 ish, up from about 206. I am on a "bulk" so to speak, and the only difference is I eat a dedicated 5-6 meals a day, basically the same stuff over and over. I am up to 16% body fat and can barely see my top abs, if at all. I am gaining size and strength so to speak. I take animal paks, protein (whey in the AM and casein before bed), and I am currently cycling creatine. In another 4 weks or so I will go into a cut phase, where the difference is I will not eat a dedicated 5-6 meals, I will only eat when I am hungry, but it will still be portioned controled meals from the previous "bulk". I will be cycling off the creatine, but still taking my animal paks, and protein. I will hopefully end up around 208 and have gained a lb or 2 of muscle. I will end up at about 10% bodyfat and be able to see my abs again...I will not change when, what or how I lift during that time, only what I consume. Food controls it all. I am not telling any stats to brag, or prove points. There are many guys and gals bigger, faster and stronger than me....but I still remember the early days of wanting that magic answer, a just tell me what to do and I will do it approach...eating right is hard for most (VERY hard for me), and it sucks. I would rather supersize each time, or get the big mac with cheese etc...but I could show you what I look like when I do...252 lbs and 31% body fat later . Best of luck Finch, I hope you get what you are looking for from this thread, and head on down the road better informed.
There were a lot of assumptions in that post. Maybe I should have added a bunch of smiley faces? I was merely stating what I thought was true. No pissing match here, and also why would you assume that I'm in worse physical shape than you? My suggestion was merely that...just a suggestion. It might work for him like it does for me, especially if he's strapped for time. Along with eating correctly, the meal plan they use as a guide might work. But hey, I was only trying to help a guy out.
Thanks for all the info. I just need to find a routine and stick to it. The flab on my belly should be a good motivator but it hasn't been in the past.
No ill intentions at all. This is the sole reason I did not want to reply to the post, but Finch ask so I thought to chime in. I meant nothing towards you at all, and apoligize if it came across that way at all. I actually logged on to recant my post (but it was to late) as it got to be too much about me and failed to answer Finchs' question, I just wanted him to hear first hand by someone who went from college athlete, to fat @$$, back to pretty decent shape. I usually keep my long posts to away from here, but I am passionate about health, same as hunting...so I failed to stay away. Again, nothing meant at all toward you, and I think we both did the post some good, by showing there are several ways to skin a cat.
You are very active from all your pics you post, so it is hard to think you are "out of shape". I was the same, nothing really slowed me down, so I figured I was cool. I bought my wife a very nice camera a few years back and she started taking pictures of everything all the time. Went to the beach, came home and looked at the pictures and started that day. Taking pictures from different angles is a very humbling expierence, if you decide to motovate yourself that way.
I couldn't agree more with the camera situation. One piece of advice I can offer as well would be to use a "before" picture as your motivation. It'll help you stay motivated on those days when you wanna cheat or feel lazy. When you get to the "after" part of your training it's a huge feeling of accomplishment.
