Never heard of a red lab...I thought seriously about getting a silver one a few years back. I got in a heated debate with a guy in the dog training section about silver labs. He argued that there is no such thing as a silver lab because they aren't recognized by AKC or weren't at that time at least. I think they fell under the sage(?) coloration though and that's how they were being registered. He said they were a crossbreed between Weims and labs and were not pure blood labs and should not be considered a lab. He was a hard core pro-lab fanatic. I always thought the silver labs were cool looking.
We had a very dark yellow/red lab that we put down last summer. He was only 10, but developed diabetes and after a few months of insulin we couldn't control it anymore. That was the only health problem we had with him. Oh, his sister developed diabetes a few months before he did also. We may get another in a year or so and will look closely for a silver. I saw one once and he was awesome looking.
My lab is choc. But you can see the red in him. Once I get situated with my new job and buy house I will be getting a charcoal lab. It's like a silver but darker. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Forgot to add that I have a chocolate lab and a black lab. They are on the small side and probably mixed breed but the ywere dumped and adopted here. They look like labs anyway...their sister that came up missing was mostly black with silver and black spots on two feet and throat and was an awesome dog...I miss that dog something awful. Good dogs.
My wife wants a silver lab. They look great, but I don't want a dog in the house. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4.
Smart choice. My black lab/German Shepherd mix sheds terribly bad. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I dont have one, but a friend does. It's 10-ish and has had a few minor tumor growths removed. And its got very sensitive skin. It's a nice dog, but severely OCD when you get him out of his pattern.
Silver Labs are now going to be recognized by the AKC; however, Lab Breeders are throwing fits and I don't blame them. The silver comes from Weims, so does a lot of energy. Breeding Weim in Labs is leaving you with the possibility of a high anxiety dog that truly benefits from having attention and a family member home with them as much as possible. The Silver looks cool but I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. Red Labs are dark Yellow labs and recognized in dog shows as a Yellow lab. With that being said I would take a "Fox Red" Lab over a Silver, you will generally get a more mellow and easier dog to train. If you are going to get either you will likely pay 1k or more for a well bred one. I wouldn't buy one unless the breeder has extensive records for Hips, Elbows, Optigen and breed lines with low levels of cancer. If you are in Iowa there is a great breeder of Red's in the Rockford Illinois area. I had two great dogs from her (black and Yellow) and my buddy Mike has two plus a third she retired from the show ring and now lives with him, all Black Labs. Yeah, Im not looking at a black lab, I have a chocolate already, and have a couple friends who have blacks and they are nightmares. both super needy, high anxiety, pee when excited type dogs. No. Thank. You. Ill take my big 90lb male laid back chill lab over them anyday
That's in the breeding of the dog, assuming they were pure labs. I've been messing with labs for 20 years and you can see a HUGE difference in the dogs depending on what they were bred for. I've only messed with field trial hunt test stock for my own dogs but have seen some buddies who got dogs on looks show dog stock. You can see some crazy stuff in those dogs. To each his own but you couldn't give me a silver lab. If you do go that route be sure the pups parents have all the health clearances, minimum hips, eyes, elbows.
First off not to step on toes silver labs are not crosses. They are chocolates bred over and over to chocolate eliminating any black and yellow genes. Second they registered as chocolate. They are considered pure they just wash out the lab colors to get it there is no weim in them. Not that I'm defending then I'm hard core black lab guy! Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk
Which is why I wouldn't want one, they were breed for color not performance. If a person wants a dog just for a pet that's fine with me, I would just be cautious of the breeder and be sure the pups came from parents with the proper health clearances. And I'm with you, black dogs rule!
I have to confess I strayed and ended up with a Chesapeake Bay Reteiver, he is an unbelievable shed hunting partner but he's not a lab. Now I have an 11 week old black again and she is so much easier to work with. Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk
The dad is a pure bred lab, as is the mom, the dad is the Midwest cabelas dock dog champion and is working on his jr grand championship. I went and saw them last night and they are both great labs. Not high strung, high anxiety. Great temperament dogs. I'm very much considering it. Both the parents are in great health too
What you do with them last a lot to do with the way act. If you lock up any dog for hours on end when your at work, come home and feed them and ignore them any dog would be a spaz. Parents to my pup are choc and black most laid back dogs I ever met. But they go everywhere, duck hunt and are wounded deer recovery dogs. You will be fine as long as the dog gets exercise I haven't had the excited pee thing with my dogs, no my 4 year old son on the other hand! Lmao!! Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk
Couldn't agree more. Breeding is the key, any breeder that continues to breed high strung dogs is doing nobody a favor.
Exactly my wife was against labs because they are crazy high strung duck dogs. Now I'm on number 2 since meeting her and she thinks different now. But there are a lot that think that. Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk
