My wife is a surgical tech and is going back to school to get her RN and just received her LPN.A few days ago she had to do an organ procurement on an 18 month old. She has seen many die,not something many of us could handle on a regular basis. My job sucks for the most part.China is taking my profession.Pay isn't what it once was. As bad as my job is,(I actually still like alot of what I do,just not where it is headed)No way would I want any part of what my wife does.
The South is dumb? Who was watching the Hollyweird show, last night? Wish we could do one of those "red state / blue state" graphs on TV viewership for the Oscars.
Now, I got out of the Corps for a spell - and did some substitute teaching... While it sucked, it wasn't quite up their with getting shot at, rocketed and mortared as I have on numerous occasions - with Marines making a LOT less then teachers and working a LOT more hours. Other then a few isolated incidents, I also don't know of too many teachers who have donated body parts and their lives in defense of the nation... I do have more friends on the KIA list then I care to think about - and work with and support my brothers who have received serious and not so serious wounds. So your perspective of worst job in the world is somewhat skewed. Just sayin...
Hook.... While I'm not promoting not going to college......the friends I have who are the most successful (business) don't have degrees. Now....you can certainly have $$ and be a dumbass. You can also go to college and be a loser. Your poll says nothing to me about one geographical region being "dumb". Epic fail.
*sigh I did not think I would offend with that comment that was mostly in jest. I live in the south for Christ's sake, obviously it can't that dumb.
Well that figure was from an article about rural areas and high school graduation rates. It doesn't include metro areas.
x2 I've scrubbed pit toilets at state parks, cleaned factories, cleaned carpets, gutted thousands and thousands of shot up birds. I've been a cashier, a bank teller, a dental assistant, a telemarketer and worked customer service (on the phone) at a credit card company along with a few other job titles. Most of those jobs had 0 benefits. The bank teller and phone jobs were the ones I liked the least. I had to wear heels and stand all day at the bank and the pay was terrible. Telemarketing is for masochists and nobody calls their credit card customer service because they are happy. I donated more blood than I wanted to at the bird processing place but nobody shot at me and I got sleep in my own bed every night. I generally ignore people when they complain about how tough they have it and how other people couldn't handle their jobs. Unless you're a soldier, work in a foundry or a coalmine, I'm just not that sympathetic. A good friend of mine is a teacher... at a prison. He loves his job, has a heart of gold and never complains. I'm not sure teachers really complain more, they're just especially annoying when they do. :D
Sean, you know my stance on the military so please do not take this as disrespectful. What is the average salary for a Marine Major? 60K. Most officers that climb to the rank of Major might take 10-12 years correct? In the Prince William County Teachers payscale, a 10-12 year teacher might make 55k or so. So those two jobs are very comparable on a salary level. Now on the hours worked.....A Marine Major probably outworks a school teacher 5:4 or 6:4 in hours worked per week. But, the payscales are very similar in this area. Now in areas where teachers are paid a lot less than VA, a 10-12 year teacher might make 35k, whereas that same Marine Major regardless of geographic region is going to be averaging that 60k-----sometimes alot more based on years of service.
I have no ill will towards teachers in general. I just chalk them up to being in an entirely different world than I am. Yeah some of what I hear them complain about makes me shake my head and want them to walk in my shoes for a week. But, at the end of the day.......... it doesn't matter. It is what it is and will never change. Kind of like the public sector thread. Just curious what you meant by this.
Honestly I've never heard a teacher ***** and complain about their job. I've said It before, there's no way I could do this job. My hats off to the folks that do It. To the teachers on here (Troy and Matt and whoever else I missed), you guys are the ****!!
So NY, what would you change about the teacher payscale, work hours, job description, etc, if you were in charge?
Yes they complain too much!! If you want to become a teacher then know what your getting into!!! Its like all of my police buddies saying they hate working nights and wknds?!?!? Go work at a bank if you want to work 9-5. Cry me a river!!
