If I hated what I was doing (been there), I'd get out. I hope they're not *****ing and whining in front of the kids. If you're a teacher.....a good one, loving what you do.....then I'm not talking about you.
See, here is the root of why people think they know about teachers.....everyone went to school so everyone is a darn expert when it comes to the education field. Nothing could be further from the truth. I used to be a really black and white guy ( still am but loosening up) but I can tell you, what you guys are saying about teachers could be said about any group of people in any profession across the country in the right context. People just love to bash on teachers. I taught for six years and worked hard, called out maybe 1-2 times a year sick and that was because most of the time my kids were sick. When I left the teaching field my principal asked me to create two weeks of lesson plans to help out the new incoming teacher. I created probably six to eight weeks of lesson plans for the new teacher because it was such a tough environment in which to teach. I did it for free while I was working another full time job. My story is not unique. I know MANY great teachers that give their all, stay under the radar, and just teach. I for one am not envious that they get off 2 months during the summer. All people are created differently and everyone has a different life path. Everyone does not have to be miserable like many people that complain. I am so happy that my wife gets the summer off to spend time with me on my off days and our children. It is a wonderful gift for our family.
You are right about the pay. My brother is an RN, Shift supervisor with over 20 years in a respiratory hospital and he makes real good pay. Tons of OT as well. They are short of nurses, However, he seems to get sick a lot and working at a place where mostly older people go to die could be stressful (suck). Those people deserve the pay for sure.
Most parents who bash do so becasue of their own short-comings as a parent. It's not their fault little Jimmey is two grade level behind in reading I sure hope parents do not bash teachers in front of their kids. The kids may take as teacher's do not deserve any respect, nah that won't happen
With one exception, the summer vacation. How often does that come up when teachers are "complaining" about something? I'm guessing somewhere close to 100%. People can't get pass that. How many times have you heard, "I wish I had summers off", when a conversation about teaching comes up? It all comes down to that summer vacation.
Anyone can become a teacher, it's easy For the record the summers off are not a big enough draw for me to become a teacher.
Are you asking for all adults to behave like adults? Why not just ask for world peace too? Cure world hunger? Cure cancer? An increased age class of whitetails in MI?
You babysit some kids a few hours a day and then get summers off. Did I miss anything? No, I'm not serious.
I really don't care how hard or annoying teaching is, it's the point that teachers choose their profession knowing damn well how much they will make and who their "clients" will be. Yet they constantly complain. Maybe it's because it is a profession dominated by women.
Nothing can prepare you for dealing with other peoples kids, LOL Nothing, not only teaching either. Coach for awhile and see the love you get
Amen, I could have followed my father into his profession and had a nice salary and inherited a great business, but I know I wouldn't be happy. My brother did and now makes 20 grand more a year than me with absolute job security. I'm still happy with my choice, cause I know I'd be miserable.
VS pretty much nailed it. Anyone that knows me knows I hate snow days, I don't take sick days unless on my death bed, and I take one maybe two personal days a year. I go in at least an hour early every day, work through my lunch (oh I eat, I just don't go to the faculty room) to get work done, and my summers (which is actually "only" 2months:D I know, semantics, right?) are spent working...hard. Am I grateful to have the time off to chose to do the latter? You bet. Complaining? Nope. You all had a choice of majors when going to college.
It was pouring rain here in VA today. An unexpected thunderstorm and tornado watch popped up. The teachers escorted my kids out to me in my truck in the pouring rain and the assistant principal did not even have an umbrella.(I watch the little things people do and take notes). My daughter had drama practice after school in which several teachers stayed over an extra hour after school for free to help direct a school play. We have teachers stay over in the fall and spring and put my children through "running club" for free. It teaches kids to run and exercise hard for thirty minutes each day. Again, they do it for free. There are teachers that stay after a good 1-2 hours each day to teach music, etc. For all the bashing some of you guys are doing, there is a real flip side. A side not seen by those wearing dark lensed glasses.
Spot on Matt. You ordered the pie and now you are eating it and enjoying it. I choose my line of work just the same as you. It's like choosing to go somewhere, getting there and realizing you don't like it and staying. You have no choice but to grow bitter and unhappy. You are not this kind of teacher. Keep up the good work.
Maybe it's just the vocal minority that constantly complains. Maybe it's just the south. Maybe that is why the south is so dumb.
