I swear teachers complain more than any profession. Complain about salary, complain about having grade papers at night, complain about students, etc. I bring this up because a teacher friend posted this on FB, and well it just kinda irked me. God forbid a teacher have to work more than 6.5 hours a day or bring some work home. Join the rest of us. And don't get me started about teachers complaining about their salary.
My wife has been a teacher coming on twelve years, is a department head in high school of 2500 students, and is a basketball coach. I honestly don't hear her complain of anything as she gets her work done on time at work, and is a fantastic mom and wife.
My wife teaches at a state tech college, sweetest gig there is when it comes to flexibility and free time. Yes she is part of the union (as much as I hate that)
My wife and my mom are both teachers. I can tell you from experience, they truly do have the worst job in the world. Think about it objectively. 6 years of college, $50-$70k in college loans, 50-60 hour weeks while school is in session for in class work and out of class prep/planning/grading, terrible job security, and if your lucky you make $35k per year when you get out of school. And when it comes to $$$ out of pocket for classrooms, it's absolutely true. My wife and I spent an average of $2k on supplies and things for her room every year. I wouldn't recommend anyone go down the path of teaching as a profession to be honest.
They complain ALOT! I never see so many facebook status updates praying for snow days. It's like that 3 month vay-k every summer isn't enough.
Seriously? Teachers are not required to get a masters. And $35k directly out of college is pretty common for most jobs. Like what? And most jobs require out of pocket expenses. Just write it off.
I don't get why anyone would complain about a job that you spent so much time getting. If it's not worth the money, get out. This applies to anything, not just teaching. I believe that there are teachers that are vastly underpaid and there are teachers that are vastly overpaid at the same time. Just depends where you live.
KY Teachers are required to obtain a masters within 10 years of graduating with a bachelor's or they will be terminated. That said, they get 3 months a year in free time, get to retire on like 70% salary, and closer to 80% true take home pay after 27 years. That is retiring at around 50 years old and still making 80% take home pay til the day you die (considering the fact that they pay over 9% into retirement while working)....anyone else know of an industry with a security blanket like this one? Teachers are a vital part of society, but I have to agree they complain incessantly.....Teachers at my high school constantly tried to get the students involved with their protests over healthcare, retirement, or what ever else they felt they needed added on to base pay. Out of pocket expenses are optional, NOT required as a teacher.
More power to em' I would LOVE the free time and the chance to retire early as possible....I have a couple teacher friends...I never heard them complain!
Yes. I went to school, got an associates degree that cost me about 1/3rd of what my wife's schooling cost, made almost 2x what she did starting my very first year and have consistently made more every year, and I've never had an issue with job security. She's been laid off 2x now due to budget cuts and was never stable until she got into a private school where she is now, and her income is still ridiculously low. A masters degree is required in NY to teach, and there are many other states that require you to have one as well. $35k is pretty common for someone with an Associates, not a masters. Trust me we did write it off, that's why I know the number, but that only helps a little bit. You wouldn't believe the stuff teachers have to buy for their classroom and kids. When I did my taxes this year we even had a receipt for a kid my wife bought shoes for, because this little girls parents felt it was OK to send her to school in the middle of winter with huge holes her in her shoes. Thats an extreme example, but everything from supplies to help organize things like shelves, book cases, office type supplies, to craft supplies for lesson plans (she was a kindergarten teacher). I thought the $$$ she spent was extreme till I saw some of the other teachers she was teaching with and how they had set things up for their classrooms. We were more conservative than a lot of the others when it came to spending our own $$$. What happens a lot is things that parents are supposed to buy for their kids, don't get bought. The school doesn't have budget for it. So either the kids don't get what they need, or the teachers pay for it.
I agree 100%. I've had this discussion with my wife many times. She is seriously considering a career change, and I'm 100% supportive of it. While I don't agree with the *****ing and complaining the teachers unions constantly do, I truly think it's a pretty bad job. I know I couldn't do it and be happy.
Nope. Maybe if they spent half as much time trying to adequately educate the children as they do complaining, our education system would be much better.
Most states you do. In PA, we have to obtain 24 graduate credits within the first six years of teaching to obtain Level II certification (important as we have to have this to continue to teach here). I obtained 30 in my first two years while in the midst of planning a wedding, rewriting four new courses, buying a house, and doing some major remodeling projects. But hey, I'm just a lazy teacher with "June, July, and August" free Like most of what you do in life, you get out what you put in. Don't lump me in with a stereotypical blanket categorization.
Amen Tell you what Hooker just try and be a teacher in todays world and keep a smiling face. My wife smiles everyday she goes to work!!! You have kids to deal with and worst their parents. You have Local, State and federal laws you have to follow. I can say most here would last about 2 days as a teacher, by the third day we would have beaten a kid to death or their parents.
IDK, I think I could handle it. Most of the "adults" I'm responsible for everyday behave less mature than a 5th grader. At least kids have an excuse. First God, now teachers...you are really pushing it Hook.
