The statistics for this weekend's rut on average is 5% of does a bred in the 3rd weekend in October. Next weekend it rises a little higher. Scents always help, regardless of if the rut is on because they provide cover for you and it also will be a scent that deer are comfortable with. My favorite scent to use is Tink's Doe In Estrus #69. I buy 8 or 9 little bottles of it throughout the season. If you can't find it at a local store, here is the link where you can buy it online: http://www.tinks.com/shopping/Products/69-Doe-In-Rut-Buck-Lure__W6366.aspx
Buck urine.......i have 4oz of Buck Reaper out as i speak......very effective stuff www.mastinsdeerscents.com
Rut times Never used the stuff so can't say how effective it would be. As for whether it is the right time for it, that depends. The rut in La. goes from late Oct/early Nov. through late Jan. or even into Feb. depending upon where you live. It can get confusing because the time you think they might be rutting in your area may not be the right time because deer were stocked from different areas of the state having different rutting periods. Pick up a copy of the Louisiana Sportsman magazine. It has the rut schedules in every issue during the fall/winter. It may also be listed on the magazine's website (www.louisianasportsman.com) but I'm not sure of that. I hunt two areas that aren't that far apart in distance and one has the early Nov. rut and in the other one it starts around Christmas, so don't assume from where you live or will be hunting that you can guess.
i dont think its too early to be using doe estrus if you use doe estrus now and no other does are in heat yet and all the bucks smell is your stuff you will probably have every buck in the area scoping it out thats my opion
I put up my "mock scrape" & a few scent wafers today as well as spraying doe in estrus scent around my stands. I won't get out & hunt until Friday but plan on rattling then & may use a grunt call depending on what I see.
Buck urine will bring them in due to curiosity/competition. It also wont run other does out as much as doe-in-estrus will.
