I looked at the weather and noticed we were going back into the 80's yesterday afternon and decided I may not go. My uncle got permission to hunt another 18 acres just down the road, and the white oaks were dropping like crazy. I was not planning on going but he called and ask me to hunt with him. Remember I hunt an urban area and this area is actually on the back side of several houses. We walked near his stand and he sent me on up a ridge and about 60 yards from him. He later told me deer were already coming out as I was climbing the tree. As I listened to the neighbors scream at the TV everytime the Falcons scored on San Fran I could not help but laugh at where these deer live. I keep hearing a noise kind of like when you blow saw dust out of a crack and move your face away at the same time...just a little blow if you will. Doug later told me it was the doe blowing on her hind leg and then scratching her ear. He thought she was sneezing, but it was not the case and we do not know what she was doing. I see a doe and a fawn heading near him and he raises the ol excaliber but never shoots. I did not know at the time that she laid down so he held off. Well I drift back off to my ball game and then hear clink. I immediatly raise up and grab my bow as I know that sound, and sure enough a deer is headed at me. She stops at 39.5 and looks weird but for the life of me I could not see a hole. I see another deer on his side and think maybe he shot that deer, or missed. She eventually eases to 30 yards and I am 99% sure she is hurt, but still no visible wound. I decide to take her regardless and when she clears a tree at 18 yards I am waiting with a pin on her. Well she decides to stop with her vitals behind a tree and after a couple minutes at full draw I have to let down. She catches movement and I know it's over. After several minutes she decides all is well and eases on, and as she looks back I draw again and put it right behind the shoulder. At the shot I know she is done, but i am still confused. I call Doug and he explains that he hit her perfect, but right as he touched the trigger she raised up to (he thinks but is not sure) blow on her hoof again and quarted. He said it was a jerky motion but he had already put the pressure to the trigger and the arrow was off. He actually hit her perfect but due to her movement the arrow came out right under her in the guts. That is why I could not see blood (guts stopped the hole) and the entrance was high on the other side. he was 25' up and she was down the ridge. My arrow entered right behind the shoulder and came out the other side, and she was down in 40 yards. If you look at the pictures you can tell where they both entered and also where they came out. She died very quickly after my arrow entered and was probably a few minutes from laying down and dying anyway. The autopsy revealed that I double lunged her and Doug cut 1 lung in half and busted the liver as well. I guess it is up to Justin and the committe as to whether this doe counts in the contest and either way if fine to me. I told Doug on the way to our processor that I wish that this would have been a big buck, then he could could pay for the mount and keep it at his house, but I could brag with him and save a few duckets at the same time. He laughed and said he actually thought about that very thing while waiting to see if I was going to get a shot. That describes out hunting partnership to a T, the only discussion about who got the deer was when he ask what I wanted my half cut into. We knew without talk that we would split the meat and the cost...a GREAT hunting partner he is. I have rambled on enough and thanks for listening.
Top 3 pictures are obviously all the same, my exit on the bottom and his entrance on the top. Last picture, well the rage (shamless plug) in behind the shoulder and his exit was back. I finally got the pictures to post and maybe next time I will get better...as of right now I suck.:D
How do ya'll like those homemade wraps. Forgot to get them wrapped when I bought them, got home and said to heck with it. I have got to buy a jig and do that myself.
Good work Michael. Nothing like success buddy. Best of luck to you in the upcoming weeks, when the action will heat up!
Thanks guys, she actually ran and fell in the road a 100 yards from the truck. The property is maybe 200 yards wide with a paved road and a dirt road as the borders. The house and 18 acres are on a long narrow strip in between.
Nice job and congrats to you both, cool story. You did the right thing by putting another arrow into her.
