Would be ironic if feeding the deer is part of the solution.

    WOW!
A delivery method shouldn't be too big of a deal if they can make it into a nasal dosed inoculate. This could be an amazing breakthrough...amazing actually falls utterly short as an adjective.

The claim that it comes from a bacteria versus a prion is contrary to everything every scientist has been saying since this was first identified in the 70s. I'm not saying he's wrong but wondering how everyone else whose been studying this stuff for so long has been wrong. I guess I'll remain sceptical but optomistic untill I see something more than a claim.

While I hope that this is the cure I have to agree with Parker70 on this one it's very interesting that for all the years of research that has been done this is the first time (I have heard of) CWD has a different cause. But I would love to be proven wrong in this case!

While I hope this turns out to be true, I'm highly skeptical that it is...I'll be watching this closely.

Spring darting season. Have volunteers get trained by state wildlife agency to form teams that will tranquilize and vaccinate deer. Tag every deer with an ear tag so it is clear it has been vaccinated. Simple system to enforce as the technology and experience already exists with the added bonus that if hunters volunteer, it is one more way to prove to the non-hunting public that hunters care more about wildlife than the PETA antis.

I would rather them pursue this bacteria path and be wrong than to not pursue it at all.

I asked Dr. Grant Woods about this. He said he's sticking by the previous proven research. He said the claim that it's bacterial has not yet been reproducible. He listed several studies and bodies of work showing it was caused by the prion and not bacterial and it seemed pretty hard to argue against even with my skeptical eye and mind.

All I can say is that I'll still hold out a little hope for it. I can't imagine all the scientists that did the previous work are going to say "Oh crap...we effed up and we were wrong and here's why". On the other hand I can't really believe they'd be so wrong either.
